I left the farm for this evening's ride and got a far as Cismont store (about 4 miles). When I made the left at the stop sign I broke traction when leaned into the turn. "That was wasn't right", I thought to myself, not having goosed her in the turn. So I stopped at the next pull out about a mile down the road.

Sure enough, coolant was pouring out from the bottom of my chin fairing, and had coated the rear tire. The "engine hot" light hadn't come on yet, so I tried to limp the 5 miles back home. No such luck... the engine's overheating, and I'll be ****ed if I'll call for a tow so close to home.

The nice thing about living in farm country is there's plenty of farms with streams. I pulled over at Southern Cross farm, glommed a bottle and filled her up from the stream by the road. The hardest thing was to break the safety wire on the radiator cap without tools. The one refill got me home... leaking all the way.

Moral of the story... check your hoses! My R3 is 2 years old and and the water pump hose split. This is a road stranding item for the R3.

John, better branch water than piss... it got me home. I drained it immediately upon arrival back at the farm, and will go with Evans or Water Wetter upon hose repair.

That sucks. First one I have heard of letting go. I thought you had enough CF on that thing it would be light enough to push home.:D

My recent dyno tuning put some high temp stresses on the cooling system, and was probably responsible. Never the less, it's an easy thing to change your hoses out BEFORE they leave you on the side on the road... owners of older R3s should take note.

Boy.... that really swelled up didn't it. But you are right, it's not a bad idea to look things over every once in awhile. "Expect what you inspect" - Edsel Ford

thanks for the tip..gonna check mine out today..it's only got a few thousand miles on 'er..but it is an 06..glad ya got it back home without to much hassle..

I use Water Wetter and swear by it. I see a significant drop of oil temp readings. Granted one is not the same as the other but the relationship has got to be; greater water cooling if the oil is that much cooler.

Water from a good old Virginia creek can be used to sterilize a wound, christen a baby, or fix the Pope a cocktail. Life is good around these parts.

Good info to share hombre.
