R III or Victory XC

Rocket is also not very comfortable, the most i have been able to ride in one day 2 up is 1,000 miles last year from MV to Tulsa:D
too bad it is not comfortable for you to ride, because if it were you could get 1800 miles in a day if you could average 75 for a solid 24 hrs and refuel on the fly. I guess your rocket does have its limitations.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

Well I would think if you test rode both these bikes you would have made up your mind by now.
I find my rocket quite comfortable but then I havent ridden the victory.
My first ride on a rocket and I knew I wanted one........:D

and that was riding my first rocket from the dealer

Is this a trick question:confused::eek::D

Not sure about a trick question but perhaps a bit perplexing.
I wonder what response we'd get from a Victory forum if we asked their views on whether we'd made the right choice by buying a Rocket. Someone should do it for a bit of fun!! :D Or maybe ask something like "When I ride my Rocket I find my back gets a bit sore because my wallet's so thick it makes me sit crooked. Would buying a Victory help remedy that?" ;)

Well Peter, welcome aboard. I truly think you will buy one of these beauties. The touring model sounds like more for you and your wife. If I had it to do over I would NOT have bought a Rocket. I would have bought TWO!! Good luck Pete, and keep us posted.

having two IS the ticket kid.
I'm actually thinkin' I want a third one..
Maybe buy a wrecked one and start from the ground up building my next one.
I've got me some ideas I want to work into my next one..
Of course, this one ain't finished yet....
I see the finish line, but it's still a long way off.
I'm thinkin' something along these lines for my next one,
only Rocket powered of course.....
.

not a "true" Triumph X-75 Hurricane I know,
an updated 900, but just imagine it with 2300cc's,
a TRUE hurricane, and a worthy example of the original legacy
with the rocket name and the hurricane look...
That's my next project...
Been thinkin about this for a couple of years.
things got put on hold, but ,,,,,I'm thinkin' I may need to get it started,
it ain't gonna build itself and I really want it, so,,,
don't be surprised if I show up at Maggie Valley one year
on a one eyed orange Hurricane with 2300cc's .....
besides, it's a perfectly good excuse to buy a third Rocket.....;)
.
SO,
in response to the opening question,
which to buy.
For me, it's an open and shut case,
IF I wanted a "factory custom" like everybody else has,
go with the victory.
IF you want "different", take a test ride on a Rocket..
IF the test ride don't "sell" ya on the Rocket,
then get the victory, cause everybody I know
knew the instant they twisted the throttle the first time
if the Rocket was for them or not.
They aren't for everybody, so take a test ride and you'll know.
Either way, Welcome to the site.

Peter,
I have an objective opinion for you as I have both a R III Roadster and a 2010 Vic Cross Roads. As I'm sure you know the Cross Roads is the same as the XC without the fairing.

These bikes are not in the same class. Just because they are both 800+ lb MCs they fulfill different needs. Here's my take:

The RIII is very quick, deceptively so. It handles way better than it should. It is unique in looks. I bought the Roadster in March, it now has 14K miles on it. Also it is my 3rd Rocket. I had an '05 & '06 and now the Roadster. I strayed for a while and went to a Gold Wing then an HD Road Glide.
I have modified the stock seat with the help of the guys at Mean City Cycles. They made it so I can sit on it for 1200+ miles in a day. (San Antonio to Columbus, NC) I have added Corbin Hard bags which don't exactly give the most storage room but in my and many others opinion, they look the best on the bike. Everyone thinks they are a factory bag. I use a Kuryakyn Tour bag for the long trips. It does not have cruise, I use a throttle lock, and am in the process of wiring in an aftermarket cruise control. (no biggie). I have added a V-Stream windshield which works very well but still allows for airflow. The seating position is very comfortable (I am 6', 32" inseam). Power-wise out of the gate the Rocket is strong and then you can add more for less than $30.00.
Service on the Rocket is $400-$500 every 10,000 miles. unless you are a glutton for punishment, you will let the dealer do this since the valve adjustment is shim under bucket and unless you have a drawer full of shims....You will be buying a back tire every 8,000 miles ($175-$250) if you do it yourself.

The Victory is a great bike as well, it feels lighter than it is when it is moving, It handles very well and I think I could keep up with Andy and the guys in the twistys on it I was riding two-up and chased (pushed)a Guy on a GoldWing through the Dragon, he was scraping both pegs and I never touched down. Power wise it is the strongest of the V-Twins. A stage 2 kit can be added for about $500.00 which I would recommend doing. The cruise is great on trips though I think the control placement is ****e. Looks speak for themselves. It is a great looking motorcycle, we ride it to Bike Nights at the local HD dealer and get tons of compliments from the HD mellings. The Hard Bags are HUGE inside but do not look it on the bike. You will be able to carry more than enough for a week trip in them. Service is minimal on the Victory, Change the oil every 5K for about $50. The original tire is still on the bike at 12,000 miles and will go to at least 15K. The seat is comfortable but I would recommend a back rest. The LOOOOONG floorboards are great, they allow you to move around a lot. It is the most American made motorcycle (if that matters to you) The Triumph is British made.

Both are extremely reliable. The Rocket has had the bugs worked out from the past years. I would not hesitate to take either anywhere anytime. It really comes down to looks, riding ability and taste.
The Rocket is different from any other bike out there.
The Vic is what the HD should have become. It is a great V-Twin but it is just another V-Twin.

Hope this helps.
