Would the much smaller opening on the push button and turn version be a pain with splashback when filling the R3 tank with the baffle plate etc underneath? Using the stock one, I find I need the wide opening to angle the nozzle to prevent splashback and nozzle auto cutoff.

Good points. I tend to hold the nozzle just under the baffle to maximize the fill up. Part of that is seeing the placement and fuel level. Wouldn't be easily done with the smaller hole.

That there is the one I've been using for a couple years now. Works great!
 
I haven't taken mine apart yet. I did notice the 3 mounting holes on the new tank you purchased and went searching for pictures of other R3 tanks. Seems they all have 3 mounting holes, the other 3 must be for looks.

Most replacement fuel caps i've seen mentioned using the existing bolts. The one in your link doesn't state either way. BikeBandit should have the part number so you can order some
