My idea was maybe and its a long shot, if there was a bad wheel bearing it could be making the rear not roll as easy which could send a vibration or drag noise to the larg bevel gear hich is making the small bevel pinion work hard to turn the large bevel. Thus like a draging noise. Just brain storming out loud

I think I found the culprit

Warp, I think I found the culprit. i took the bevel box off and checked it again and I think the pinion bearing is shot. I can move the pinion splines in and out about an 1/8 of an inch and sideways about the same. there is a snap ring that holds the bearing in that you can see in the picture and there is a keeper that looks like it holds a spanner type thing that may thread into the bevel box, also in pics.

My question is has anybody ever changed on of those bearings? if so what is the easiest way to do so. The service manual says not to disassemble the bevel box but I look at it this way, It;s junk the way it is so I'm going to explore. It was put together so it should be able to be taken apart and reassembled.

Any help would be appreciated

Wel that didn't take long, this is what we have in there. Looks like the splines are pressed onto the pinion and pinion shaft runs through the housing. The inner pinion bearing is a tappered bearing and the outter looks like a sealed bearing. I'm gonna take to the machine shop tuesday and see what they can do for me, iff they cant repair it I guess another bevel box is needed. All the rust that you see is coming from the outer bearing.

The threaded case has a thrust washer in it now for the mesh adjustment

Yes I did a search on there also and found the same bevel boxes

Explain what you mean "the spline is dimpled"? Do you mean after you pull it off, it won't press back on and be tight??

on mine it looks like they deformed the spline after installing it so it won't move or come off.

I went out and checked mine and it doesn't looked deformed, looks pretty good actually. I see what the machine shop says.

inside R3 pinion

here's what I got today, bearing and seals are popular numbers will be here in 3-5 days, my problem was my nut came loose.

It took 12000 pounds to press the splines off the pinion, the you have a snap ring, seal, spanner nut, bearing, spacer, bearing and the pinion. Looks like the only preload for the bearings is the spacer because the nut tighteen the inner races together inside the pinion housing, then the whole unit screws back into the bevel housing tight against a adjustment washer to adjust the bevel gears. here's some pics
