Yeah, saw that. The 225/50 is smaller in diameter than the stock Metz which means that you end up turning higher revs at any given speed. Less gas mileage. More wear on the engine. Most Captains that have gone with that size have wished that they would have gone with the 225/55 which is only 1% larger than stock. Slightly lower revs and slight increase in mpg.
Yes I was wondering what consequences of going with a different size than stock would be but I could never find the size of the Metz 240/50/16 that is on my Roadster. I know the section width is 9.00" because I measured it. Measuring the diameter would be a little difficult so I didn't fool with it.
When you say stock are you talking about 240/50/16?
Because the touring bike uses a 180/70 R16 and I have the Roadster.
Mark a spot on the tyre, roll bike forward one revolution, measure distance covered, divide by pi - 3 1/7 or 3.14159 26535 89793 23846 26433 83279 50288 41971 69399 37510...........

almost identical I'm about to put one on myself just as soon as I wear out the 245/55/16 which has been great except that extra bit of height has caused it to hit the gaurd on a couple of BIG bumps resulting in a left indicator wire being broken but other wise it almost completely corrected the speedo only 3 kmh out instead of 7kmh as the Metz is.
You wont have that problem with the 245/50/16 as it apears to clear alright though
Found a nail in my rear Metz tire today and it is leaking air. Thinking about going Darkside since I have to take the wheel off. The Metz still has some life on it but its got 5k on it and it won't be long until I need to get a new tire anyways. I really can't make my mind up for the 245/50/16 or the 225/55/16. After looking at the pictures of fellow riders that was on the Dragon (killboy photo) it looks as if the 225/ has more patch to the asphalt compared to the 245/ which to me is better than having most of tire floating around in the air around the twistes. Geez this is hard. I'm leaning towards the 225/ because reading all the Darkside threads everyone is happy with that size.
I run a 245/55/16 and can't see how you would have more tyre on the road either way cos it will change from different breeds of tyres and air press, wieght of rider etc. the guys running 225's say they find them easier to throw around well all I can say is I don't have any trouble throwing mine around (I weigh 112 kgs or 240pound there abouts) by the way if you decide to go 225 make sure you go a 55 as in 225/55/16 or you will lowering you gearing and ground clearance, my 245/55/16 gears my bike up but on really big bumps hits the iside of my gaurd on the outside edges so I am thinking of getting my Fornale shock extended by 10mm which would solve the problem and give even more clearance so I can crank it over further still other wise I'll just go a 245/50/16 next time
Well today my 225/55/16 Raptor arrived and it won't be long I will be on the Darkside. I went with this size since most of you run it and I wouldn't have any problems. I have seen where Triumph increased the shaft size on the 2010 Roadster models and as of right now with the stock Metz I have about 3/8" between the tire and shaft housing. I didn't want to push my luck with the 245/55/16 since the section width is a little bit larger.
