Yeah, Clearview recommended that when in your usual seating position, on a flat surface, you should be able to see over the shield to a point on the road 50 feet in front of the bike.
Sounds like a good tip to me. I've never read anything about an actual recommended distance.
I would be curious to know what their basis for establishing this distance.
I have always used about 2 to 3 inches below my eye height. Guess now I will have to go measure the distance forward to the road surface.
I would note that the limited view to the road surface from inside a cage is about 12 to 15 feet.
Other than perhaps parking lot maneuvering, 50 foot might be appropriate. Since the shield curves the distance becomes shorter as you gaze left or right.
I sure do not understand how some riders can just look through their shields all the time.
