The odyssey begins !

What is all involved in pulling the pan, I figure the 3 drain bolts and all the other bolts holding the pan. What about all the other bigger bolts? Doing 10k service and want to see how much crap is on the screens.

Once the oil is out there are about 20 or so 8mm headed bolts around the outside and a couple towards the middle. Pay attention as one of them has a little copper washer on it. I'm not sure which one as I noticed it later. I took an educated guess and it doesn't leak. It doesn't show the washer in the manual. I'ts hard not to tear the gasket and they are $15.00 ! If your looking at the manual I believe the big bolts you are seeing are exposed after the oil pan is removed. They hold the mains latter. You shouldn't have to mess with them. I only dropped my mains latter to make sure there were no pieces of broken bearing sitting on top of the windage tray per warp 9.9's suggestion.

My father is also mechanically inclined. I remember when I was about 11 (which is odd cause' I can't remember what I had for breakfast) he bought his first motorcycle. It was a well worn 1966 Kawasaki 250 Samurai with a blown tranny.
Bringing up blowing trannys, will probably get Jim posting on this.

Thanks man, I am really interested to see what is in there after 10k, no where do they say to clean that out as part of service, but if I am getting chunks of gasket sealer just by dropping the oil at 1k miles I have to believe more is stuck on the screens...

Here is a short video I found on youtube. It's not my plant but it's all the same equipment we use. It's made by a Swedish company called Tetrapak.

Cool. I love the bit (at 2'58") that turns the pack 90 degrees, and then the very next thing that happens is that they are turned back to the way they were facing. Was that bit mandated by the Department of Redundancy Department?

It does that so it can put a label on the end. It does that so it can put a label on the end. ;)

Actually you would be surprised how dirty with scarf those screens in the pan get even without busting bearings like feeds bike did, when I dropped my pan to retrieve the broken Detent spring I was amazed at how much crude was in the screens
