I figured suspension would be high on most people's list. It's one of the best mods for my Bonnie too. And Skip, that's a good suggestion about the horn.

You think 5% more profile makes that much of a difference?

In addition to the above, and I hope I'm not opening a can of worms here, but fitting a slightly higher profile rear tyre - 240/55 instead of 240/50 - has improved a number things for me: handling, grip (more a brand thing than size but..), fuel economy, mileage, softer ride, looks and for me it puts the bike better in the power band when coming out of corners, although that depends a little on how you ride.

PLEASE don't turn this into a pro or anti Darkside discussion - it's about profile.

All good ideas for a first mod. Personally, I would leave everything stock until you felt something was lacking or needed improving then address each item on how much the stock version or lack there of gives you the ****s and do that.

If I bought a new Roadster, the first thin i'd do is the "triple filters, derestrict all gears, remove secondaries and tune" mod. In my opinion this mod offers the best bang for buck and makes the bike so much more fun. May only 15-20% power (ONLY lol) but the way it changes the ride ability and extra instant zip is brilliant.

If you are paying a pro to do it should cost you about $600 including bits but blokes on here can talk you through what to do if you can hold a screwdriver with either hand.

I'm the type of bloke that can't tell the difference between a left handed and right handed screw driver so i just pay someone that knows what they are doing.

Ditto, I have done the POD's and at the same time removed the secondary butterfly's. Not a vast difference but I like it;)

Then I put on the TOR's and retuned to suit. Again not a vast difference but sounds a bit deeper and lost the whistle:D

I usually ride solo (Can't find a 33 year old that will ride with me;)) so the suspension hasn't been an issue, I have no trouble chucking it around the twisties:D

Hagon Nitro shocks and Progressive fork springs with bottoming cone extenders from Wayne.
The best out There
Hagon shocks, utopia backrest
O.
The Utopia backrest is a must on long rides

So easy and as Ponters said we have threads on here

not related to handling but safety.
A stebel air horn.
cheap, easy to mount up,
very effective for waking texting cagers up.
an Absolute Must the std horn is Pathetic and that is putting it mildly

I have 20mm over lenght Hagons and it made an amazing Improvement, if I was to ever go back to a Bike tyre it would be the bridgestone because from the feed back from those here that have tried it, It apears to have overcome All the Short comings of the Sh!t Metz tyre the higher profile is just an added bonus
... now My opinion as far as the best improvement would be to make the Beast breathe IN and OUT get yourself a decent Exhaust and go then Triple K&N's, The 2780's are the popular choice but I wanted more and went for the RX4040's http://www.r3owners.net/custom-mods/12381-bigger-better.html
