Shifter Has a Lot of Play in It

ok Calboy there should be some little flats for a spanner on the base of the ball you will need to gently push aside the foam grease retainer assumming they are still there and they are on the ball =side of shifter out of view in your piucture

The grease retainers are coming apart.
But the question is, if I could get a wrench in there to keep it from turning so I can actually tighten that M6 nut, wouldn't I still have that play because of the thickness of the wrench itself?
To accomplish anything I would probably need one of those real thin bicycle spanners which I don't have. I threw them all away the moment I found out Lance Armstrong was a cheater!!

I was about to buy the Lance Armstrong Oakley spec frames as that unfolded I was devastated, Like so many I followed him
back to question ..... go out and buy some elcheapo spanners and grind one down I do still have all My Bicycle Tools as I still ride both road and Mtn bikes

Calboy is the play excessive or interfering with gear changes ? .. if not just leave it alone and ride (and enjoy) your new bike as been suggested. Rockets never going to have slick gear changes like other bikes .. gearbox is more agricultural than quick shift mate.

It took me a couple of hours, trip to the hardware store included, but I have finally fixed it.
Took the shifter link apart, bought a dome nut and a lock washer, cleaned everything up, used some special German lubricant for the ball joints and everything is working great.
No, there is no more play at all. I am sure now, after taking everything apart, that it was never meant to be any.

This new Rocket of mine keeps me busy. Needs a lot of attention. Ever since I got her, a little bit over a week ago, I've spent more time in the garage than in the company of my wife!
I wasn't even aware that the Giro" is happening as we speak, but I have a hard time watching those superbly fit cyclists and not wanting to be young again and in great shape. But that's life, I suppose...
