Move the fuel filter?

I don't know what is causing Longrider to be "sick of pulling all that stuff out of the tank". in 9 years and 40,000 miles I've changed the FF once. It didn't need it, but I thought I just should do it. What is happening Longrider to make you have to change your filter so much ?
Its only the third time..... but that's enough. It just seems so unnecessary to disturb all that stuff. I have picked up some dodgy fuel somewhere ... a lot of idle and low speed running probs .... the filter that I just took off has quite a bit of resistance.

about 3 bar is what she runs at. you would also need to ensure the filter will flow enough too while maintaining that pressure, assuming you're not using the OEM / Mahle KL 145 or exact equivalent.

relocating the filter from before the fuel pressure reg in the tank to outside the tank (after the pressure reg) may have an adverse impact on pressure.
i.e. if the OEM dropped pressure by say 0.5bar then supply pressure to the injectors would be 2.5 bar instead of 3 - assuming you only move the filter only to outside the tank - moving the reg also would require fabrication of a return line to the tank.
i can't say what pressure drop (if any) the OEM filter has, as all the tests i've done were with filter between pump & reg. chances are it is negligible on a stock Rocket anyway.

biggest problem i'd see with the relocation is spilling fuel from the line when you go to change filter. you would also lose a large % of fuel filtration in the tank since the reg recircs double filtered fuel within the tank
Thanks, this is what I was after .... I didn't think about pressure regulation.
The whole thing happened because living in rural NSW I have to rely on mail order for everything and I'm just looking for alternatives.
Looked on eBay and there is no Aussie listing for the Mahle filter .... plenty from the US or UK ....... Oh well I'll just have to wait.

A BMW filter also works on the rocket and is a little cheaper when I changed mine on my r3t that is what I used and I had bout 50000 miles when I changed it I don't remember what the filter number is but I did post it a few yrs ago

OOOOOkay  I just installed a set of 440 on my R3. Saw what you mean. Crannies with backed dirt and grime.
that's Natural Sound Proofing don't clean that away or every body will here you coming:cautious::whitstling::rolleyes::roll::roll::roll::roll::roll::roll::roll:

Commodore filter fits check with @ozrider but I don't think he had to make anu major mods for it to fit I on the other hand have about six of the suckers (Mahle filters) that I got of flea bay some time ago at less half the cost of the triumph ones including postage, if you get stuck drop me a line and I will send you one, incidentally I have in my travels around some of the back country of Auss including Tassie picked up a few tanks of crap,...... if you saw the Sh1t I got out of my tank after one trip you wold see why you should change the filter about every 30,000km, i have stretched it out to 40,000km the last time and ended up with enough dirt in my fuel lines and injectors to top dress my front yard ended up replacing rubber lines and having to get the injectors Ultrasonically cleaned

Thanks Hans.
Les PM'd me yesterday and I think I have it sorted. Just a real pain as I was having the idle problems up at SW Rocks and everything steadily went downhill from there. TPS=6.1, I reckon that that's close enough, everything else checks out so I thought I would change plugs and FF. As I posted earlier, the old filter is quite resistive to blow through so I am hoping that the issue ends there. I think the worst part of the whole process is being relegated to the chook chaser while the Rockets on the bench.

did you also check the stepper motor volts it should 1.2 above the TPS

Yep, stepper was 7.3, which should be spot on. Ran the "Blastedbones" tune back in, adapted and it seemed a bit better but still fell back to a lumpy (uncomfortable) idle. I had to come back to work today but no-one is here so I might take another couple of days off to play with the Rocket.

if it is the original Blastedbones tune then the idle is set to low (he had it set around 750rpm I found the problem same when I ran it increase the last three boxes to 900 (even 850 is a tad slow) and you find a improvement

I have found that .... I'll try to lift it when I put it all back together .... around Thursday ..... thanks
