Carpenters new pipe, heat shields required?

I stand corrected on the size. The quote that I remembered incorrectly was

I've built these headers at 1 5/8" O.D.
Through the development I've gone up to 2" O.D.

However, I still don't like the obvious welds and the springs. It's just as well that we all have different likes and dislikes or we would all have identical bikes.

I think the Sidewinder exhaust looks great, the welds are expected when trying to form a bend on a 2" pipe. I can live with it. I presume you had the ecu flashed as well? Remind me again what intake are you using? Ram Air? K/N's?

I have the PCV with Auto tune and a map provided by Carpenter. My airfilter is Ramair.

that header, imho, screams to be unpolished and pipe-wrapped... it has a great home-brew/test-rig look to me... will have to go start checking in the sofa cushions to see if there is a grand and a half of loose change hiding out...

I have the first run Carpenter headers on my R3 and with wrap plus heat shield in place I have holes burned in two pair of jeans. The Sidewinders may be my next step. I generally keep my foot up and out on my highway peg most of the time and slide completely back in the saddle pressing against the backrest when stopped as to have my foot placement at the collector which is running along the frame. Small price to pay though for the increase in performance and sound.

I quess the real point I was stressing was that just about all the performance exhaust that I've seen on this forum have had real heat issues or required heat shields to be manufactured and installed. This pipe is like riding with the stock exhaust but with the potential for more power. I'm not saying you won't feel any heat but a minute after you put your bike in gear you don't even think about it anymore.

True. When rolling and up on the highway peg (which I would be any way) the heat is not an issue. Really the only time is when maneuvering to park and shut down. Definitely pay attention to my position.

Of curse mine were all three made prior to the sidewinder style. For this Na motor I would be willing to try a set but other then looks they produce the same power as the ones above, so no need to spend more on pipes just for looks as its ride time

I tried to reply before but here goes. To each his own but by looking at the spacing between the exhaust nut and header pipe it's evident that it is not a 2" pipe. As another pilot replied it's 1 5/8". It's much easier to make a significantly smaller pipe fit better.

Thanks for the pix! As with the CES there are NO issues when on the pegs.
If one needs to use hwy pegs off the engine guard, I expect that #3 will be trouble.

What is your impression of any power gains from that pipe?

I have heard they got about 165 on a stocker. Mine come in slightly over 243HP.
