Transmission Failure

Ah, fer chissakes... you wuz' goin' on about your Yammie. Methoughts you were on to something big for we gear-starved Captains.:)

I spoke to 3 triumph dealers today about 2nd gear pop out and update kit T1000008.

Freedom Cycle Reno, NV. Hanz
B O P Caldwell, ID. Yusef
Baxsters Marnie, IA. Mike (And About Guss)

They all say the same thing about the update kit. It cost $210. I has the parts to fix the output bearing and the transmission problems. Takes about 10 to 15 labor hours to do the job. They say there is nothing in this kit for the cam chain and clutch.

I would like to hear some feedback from the guys who had this update kit installed.

BTW: Mike at Baxsters said Guss is out of the coma and now retired on disability.
He likes to comes into the shop to help out with special easy stuff. I guess just for fun.

Thanks, Bill.

OMG! Gus was in a coma!?!?! How did I miss that? I need to give him a call!!!
What happened to him!

As far as the upgrade kit... no tranny problems. Power shift no clutch all the often. 40K miles. Guss installed my Nev cams at the same time as the upgrade at no extra cost because he was already inside. She screams. Baxter's Rocks.

Seems worth installing the upgrade.
Your total cost after the fix should be ~$5000, which is cheap for that bike.

Ditto. I wouldn't pay more than 4K for a pre 09 without an upgrade kit already installed. Your bike will be worth a lot more when finished. No brainer.

I don't mind dropping the money to fix the problem, but is this kit actually going to fix the 2d gear slip problem. Other than that, she's problem free and I don't want to take a chance of creating a problem while still not fixing the only really one I have?

IRR please let us know if you get this done and if it hits the intended target.

My bike's 2nd gear popout was cured with the upgrade.

The symptom was:
Full throttle in first gear, quick shift to 2nd at 3-4K rpm or higher,
back on full throttle,
pops out of second into neutral.

I just talked to Gus and he is OK. He is working at Baxter's but only works on Baxter's vintage bikes (there are a lot of them there and worth the trip to see them).

I would trust Baxter's over any Triumph dealer because they have done so many R3 upgrades it is second nature for them.

The symptom was:
Full throttle in first gear, quick shift to 2nd at 3-4K rpm or higher,
back on full throttle,
pops out of second into neutral.

Different symptom:
Mine's always had that "potential bounce out" between second and neutral when shifting from first. Somewhat like the phantom 1st engagement at a stoplight. I've learned to ensure a firm shift and that doesn't happen.

My symptom:
Solidly in second gear, cruising, accelerating, etc (not associated with shifting at all)

roll heavy on throttle with any incline at all and between 2800-3000 rpm will momentarily flop out of gear and back in. No neutral indication, no shifting back in required, just back off the throttle for a sec and she's right back in.

If I begin a gentle acceleration after it doesn't do it again (unless it's a steep hill), if I get right back on it hard, it immediately does it again.

Only happens on inclines and only around that RPM range and only in 2d gear.

Makes me believe the gear teeth are worn somehow and rolling over under the load and excess weight on the rear end from the incline (Dang gravity!)
