Russell Day Long Seat Failure

As an upholsterer, I can say that the vinyl must be defective. I've seen boat seats 10 years old that didn't look that bad. No vinyl should "fall apart" like that in that short a time. And if you can find an upholsterer out your way to do it for what other posters have estimated, go for it. Around these parts you'd pay $200-250 for tear down, repattern, pad, sew and reapply.

I have seen vinyl look like that before . . usually after a coca cola or something has gotten on it and started growing. Other things like organics (meat juices etc) grow like crazy. Do you have cats? Are they munching out on the local bird population on your seat?

As for the seat being hard and uncomfortable . . they tell you in the info . . it takes 500 - 1000 miles to actually "break in" the seat. I know with mine that was about right. Still the most comfortable seat I have ever owned.

Well i tell my customers , if were all tradesmen we will all do a good job , if were all similar skilled we will all be around the same price , because labor will be approx the same , but the difference comes when anyone has a problem , because we can all make mistakes and it should'nt be up to the customer to listen to excuses , JUST FIX THE FRIGGING THING.

Its a motorbike seat its made to be out in the sun you don't carry a frigging garage in your back pocket , If a cleaner will not fix it , and has a upholsterer on here just said its a vinyl problem , WELL THEY SHOULD FIX IT .

Has far has i'm concerned i could'nt care less HOW MANY good seats they have churned out they are expensive if they bought a bad batch of leather , vinyl whatever , its buisness , FIX THE MANS SEAT and they can claim the cost back of the people who sold them the vinyl .

I'm a painter , and perhaps a dozen times over the last 30 years of working for myself i've had a problem with Jobs , , what have i done , gone looked at the job , on a couple of occasions i've suspected my employees have took a short cut , generally because they want to get home its hot or whatever , and said no problem we will FIX it free of charge .
Theres been perhaps 6-7 times over the years i've looked at it , knew straight away the paints broken down been a manufacturer problem , what have i done , easy , rang the rep up TOLD HIM what the problem is and TOLD him they are liable for labor and material . any arguments we move on . .
Most time they have come to the party , the odd one or two did'nt and i will not use there products .

BUT at no time should the customer have to pay twice when ITS NOT THERE FAULT .

lIKE I SAID DOING A GOOD JOB COUNTS FOR nothing when you will not back your product .

My advice go take the seat to 2-3 indipendent up holsters , get it in writing they suspect its a vinyl problem , and take them to the SMALL CLAIMS COURT get back your money plus expenses , then post on EVERY FORUM about your problem .

Thanks guys for taking the time to respond. I still think the seat is the best on the market. I paid around $600 plus shipping and that is hard to swallow. I been riding for over 40 years but only had 6 bikes. This is the first time I have spent money on a seat. All have been outside, this one stored inside except for a ride to work, then covered. The vinyl is bad, plain and simple. Russell is too big and too far away to grab and too easy for them to brush me off. I was thinking about sending it to Sargents in Florida, at least on my side of the world. Can't find a shop in this area with good reports.
Hasn't been wet, no pets or food present. Too ashamed to ride and park near anyone else. I haven't put 1K miles on it this year.
Best wishes to all.

Chris

Chris that sucks, I have a 06 Classic Touring seat you can use until you get that one fixed send me your address I will get it off to you. No man should only be able to ride his Rocket 1K a year.

Warp, PM sent

That's an offer no one can refuse.:)

Might take a month but found a local 5 miles away that has been his hobby for over 35 years. He is convinced that it is the vinyl and can't wait to take it apart. He is in the textile trade for a living and knows this stuff. Also covers with hippo, snake, and other exotic stuff. This won't be cheap for all three pieces but covered for 10 years for anything! Has made up to 4 seats for folks that want to just swap them out.

No problem I will get her off to you right after the fourth when everything opens up again. I will also send the plate that it hooks to on the bike in case yours is not the same.

Like many others, I seriously considered a RDL for my R3T.

After this report (the service not the failing prodiuct, there is no way I'll spend $$ on one until I can be assured they stand behind their products.

For now they don't, so it's a Corbin.

My beef is the vinyl has started to fail and Russell can only comment the it must have been left in the sun. Sorry Russell, no more business from me if you can't stand behind your products. You SUCK:mad::mad:

Make that 5 they lost. Still considering the seat, but don't like that I'm so far away. I have a guy in the area that I would consider first since he's only 15 miles away.
