My '06 Std has developed a new issue in the last couple of weeks. Occasionally when pulling away slowly from a stop there will be a noisy shudder from the front left of the engine. It doesn't sound like metal-to-metal grinding but it is loud and I can feel the shudder through my left foot and through the clutch. I know little about about clutch and transmission inner workings but an initial thought would be clutch plates vibrating against each other. Another thought would be first gear is slipping on the dog gears.

Thoughts?

Hey Tdragger:

I'm no expert, but I'll tell you what I personally experienced. The clutch action was flawless. No more shudder than usual (I get a little with too much clutch at low RPMs). The bike launched well and drove just fine.

HOWEVER ... with the RPMs in the 2.5 to 4K range and under load, the beast made an awful noise. It started off quiet, and I'd look back to my wife and say, "did you hear that," but then about 100 miles after I thought that I started hearing things, it was quite distinct and predictable.

It would not do it in neutral. It would not do it with the clutch in, leading me to erroneously think it was my clutch, and leading me to disassemble and inspect the entire clutch assembly unnecessarily.

But in gear, and with even just a tiny bit of load, or a handful of throttle, it would just screech. I ended up parking the thing for fear that it was going to leave me stranded.

To this day, I still have a bit of shutter in the clutch at low RPMs if I let the lever out a bit too much. It's done that since day 1, it does it now, and it did it after the upgrade kit. So I'm not certain, but that may be a non-issue. I guess it depends on how severe it is and whether it is completely eliminated, as mine is, but slightly more RPMs.

Anyway ... FWIW.

My two cents:

My '08 Classic has <700 miles on it so far, and there are no issues other than jumping out of first into neutral once in a blue moon and the "elusive neutral" problem that seems to be getting better with every additional day of riding.

The stories about the "upgrade kit" and the way Triumph has stood behind their product, even when out of warranty, are what made me decide to purchase a Triumph motorcycle (on top of the obvious audacious performance and styling of the R3).

So far Triumph has done the smart thing: over-achieving by ethical standards as well as protecting their reputation. Hopefully they can afford to continue that practice...it will continue to pay off for them if this darn recession ever ends.

Am I Eligible?

Sorry for the ignorance, but how do I know if my '07 RIII Standard is "eligible" for this Upgrade Kit or not? How does it work? Thanks for any info.

The percentage for this thread can scare the hell out of you. Rounded off so far it is about 60% with no problems and 40% having or needing the upgrade. I do admire Triumph for what they doing in trying to make things right depending on the Dealer. I know darn well if I called Colonial Cyclesports in Colonial Heights Va. they wouldn't have a clue if asked about the Upgrade Kit or if they did, they would deny it. I will be well over 20k on my 2005 by the end of summer and other than having the paint can rattle fixed under warranty, she is running strong and better than ever. I can't help but wonder if a bike can have one symptom and not the others "IE" the reversed bearing in the TDU or loose internal shifter nut. My philosophy is going to be simple however, I am going to ride it until something breaks and then worry about it. There are allot of R3's out there with higher mileage than mine, still going strong. I wouldn't have a problem in firing the Old Girl up right now and heading across Country with no worries at all other than a pissed off Wife at home.

Well, someone opened a can of worms now. How do you explain to someone what makes a bike 'eligible' and what makes it ineligible??:(

I would have never started this thread in the first place simply because there is no predetermining symptoms that 'automatically' make the bike eligible. It's a case-by-case scenario. Eligibility is decided ENTIRELY by the respective dealer/ Triumph, Newman based on a a wide assortment of problems.

Like I said previously, Triumph has been exceptional about handling the units that exhibit qualifying symptoms. That don't mean however, that they can't, at any time, curtail the 'good will' program and say that's it. At that point there could be a whole bunch of owners left out in the cold, so to speak. In my opoinion, it's better not to discuss it and not to rattle the bushes, but to let it play out on a case-by-case basis with various dealers.

Thanks, Flip, that's why I asked instead of running to my dealership demanding "the upgrade". Would it have been more correct to ask what the qualifying symptoms are? Since one of the poll responses alludes to the fact that some dealerships are less than forthcoming with the offer when warranted, I'm doing what I always do - asking the experts and figuring out the right course of action before involving the dealership at all.

Mike- do a search for "upgrade kit." Almost all of your questions will be answered. And you will also see what has led up to it.

There is a reaction that this thread is somehow letting the cat out of the bag. All someone has to do is read any of the forums and it is no secret that Triumph is simply standing behind their product. I am sure whoever from Triumph signed off of on putting together the upgrade kit and established the criteria for qualifying has done the number crunching. It's pretty apparent they are committed to doing it as long as a tech can verify there is a problem.

I don't want to see the R3 upgrade turn into a fiasco like the Bonneville spoke brealage did. I'm sure there are a number of T100 riders out there in cyberland that had to eat the cost after Triumph decided to quit replacing the rear wheel/spokes at no cost and I'm sure thyat's a lot cheaper than the R3 upgrade kit dollar wise.

What tics me is that I have to worry that I f the bike breaks due to something " they" put together wrong, or something that was a bad design, are they going to cover it out of warranty. It's easy to be "pro" Triumph if they've already fixed yours. I just hope that they keep up their good will. Mine runs great, except that I get some vibration at 100 mph that I don't remember having before. I'm sure it could be a multitude of things causing this.... But it makes me wonder is some problem brewing.
