Non Triumph sourced Crush Rings....

The oil is pretty black and has a strong gas odor. I am wondering if my fuel air mix is off or I have an injector issue.

After this 5K running Castrol RS 4T 10/40 and a K and N 204C-I am switching to a 22u reusable metal filter that actual filters the oil rather than pushing it through the bypass valve.

Any thoughts on causes for excess petrol smell coming from the oil (Amsoil) or is that to be expected with 8K miles on the oil?
You might want to pull the spark plugs and see if there's any fouling. If it's running rich, your plugs will look black and sooty. Remember, there are 2 per cylinder. If you already have a Ramair or triple air filters installed, pulling the spark plugs will be pretty easy.

Might want to look into the micron filtration rating for your metal filter vs what Triumph requires (can be difficult to find these values), and make sure that getting rid of the oil filter pressure bypass valve is a good idea. Don't want to blow a gasket, literally then figuratively!

Those metal reusable filters are not a good choice for long engine life. They do not filter out the smaller particles that need to be kept out of your engine. There are plenty of less expensive good filters such as Purolator PL14612. I get mine at KMart for $3.99. Or just use the Triumph oil filter. Triumph recommends using 10W50 oil. They like Castrol 4T Full Syn.

Hey thanks for all the great advice from you guys on a mundane topic such as washers!

I learn so much from this forum it is amazing!

So I will torque those back at 25Nm (two magnetized sump plugs and the OEM fill plug) when the parts get here in another day and run a K and N 204C til for 5K miles until I research these high flow oil filters.

I cut my triumph oem filter in half and with a 3 Bar oil pump I can not image how the oil is going through the media and just not bypassing-sorta defeats the idea of filtration. I will look into it closely and thanks the guys that brought this issue up.

The info on the plugs was fantastic too as I have 6 plugs arriving from Flip today with my EBC double H pad sets and will take a look at that(always have a full tank when you need to pull it LOL).

I see at 20K Triumph calls for a new fuel filter.....Almost there at 18.7K miles so I might as well take care of that ..I am seeing 52 USD for that plus shipping. Hoo HA!

Well...she was riding great last weekend with dirty oil and bald tires so this is all worth it and hopefully I will see some of you US guys up at Deals Gap...I have a couple of bikes that I have donated in crashes up there( Yamaha R1 and a CBR 929RR) so it will be relaxing riding up there not racing other nut cases.

Thanks for all the info and do you guys run any fuel injector cleaners through to deal with the bad petrol we get time to time?

Just curious if I am having an injector issue dumping all this gas into the petrol if it is not a plug issue.

Thanks again and you guys that can ride...

Ride safe!

Cheers.....Greg;)

Lots of fuel filters at a fraction of the Triumph cost will fit the Rocket, I run some seafoam every now and then do not know if it helps or not but the can says it does o_O

Scot....

What fuel filter have you used.....Any aftermarket brands to recommend? I noticed you mentioned Seafoam...what is superior to that over Techron?

BTW...You a Marillion fan?

Cheers...Greg

For the correct fuel flow you need a Mahle KL 145 or Mann MWK 44. These can be ordered from auto parts stores for $15 to $20 or on Amazon for $19 to $25. Or a local BMW and Ducati dealer may have one in stock for about $30 to $35 or so.

Two questions...Mahle($18) vs Mann($23) or

Wix 33032 for 6 dollars...is there a diff besides the 12 to 17 dollars?

Thanks!

Greg

Mobil m108 or m110 oil filter. Chevron techron fuel injection cleaner, a lot of engine manufacturers rebadge this as their own fuel injector cleaner it's good stuff. I agree about the washer, buy a set or two keep until you need them like if you get a bur on one.

YES there is a difference. I was going to buy the Wix myself, but if memory serves correct, it doesn't filter down to 10 microns, it only goes to 20 microns, so I passed it over. The fuel filter is too important to go ultra cheap on.

The problem with full flow filters is that they are full flow and there is no way they can filter all of the oil. Its most likely part bypassed. A 10 micron filter is good but any particle the size of 4-5 micron is going to cause wear on the engine. Oilfilm is about 5 micron. A bypass filter is the only way to get clean oil. Passing slowly through a 1 micron filter dramatically reduces particles over 5 microns.

This is my filter

To be adjusted with proper length hoses...
