I inherited a Rocket III with training wheels

Welcome to the forum. Nice project and great that it fired up without days of frustration.

"SHE LIVES"
After pushing the start button about 50 times it suddenly started to crank!!!
A few squirts of starting fluid and it started to run "popping Coughing bogging and smoking" and suddenly it started to idle, :D
after a few minutes I was was able to rev it and it was purring like a Kitten.
Now I need to check the brakes and take her out for a spin.
Happy Happy Happy!!!
Awesome.

I hope you decide to keep the Rocket. Take the training wheels off it. You are going to fall in love with this bike. I am not kidding. I am glad to see you have it running. Someone is smiling down on you today.

Hot leg syndrome is normal on this bike. If you find that it's running quite lean, and they are lean from the factory, you can put in a better tune with TuneECU, and that will cool the pipes down a bit. Don't expect miracles though....exhaust pipes by their nature are hot. Also, there is a fuel filter, it's in the tank. Get a can of Seafoam and put about 3 ounces in a full tank of fresh fuel, and ride it out. That will clean the injectors.

Decided to take the tank off to change the filter, in a way I'm glad I did, but its full of rust and going to be fun to try and get clean, gonna try and get a soft wire brush inside it and scrape off as much as I can rinse it out and call it good!

In the good ole days, we used to put a piece of chain, or some bolts/nuts in a rusty tank, and give it a good shake, to loosen up the rust. However, with the Rocket tank, and inside pump/sender unit, you'd have to first remove all that stuff.
That was my first thought too. Small chain to knock out the rust, then some Kreem tank sealer.
