Heat from radiator

The Tourer is not stock with lowers. My addition of same did increase the heat; but, I prefer the reduced upper torso, and principly my head, buffetting. Fortunately I don't get stuck in traffic much, with the exception of the occasional railroad blockage and then it does become quite warm. This is my first water cooled cycle so I'll defer to others on the abnormality if that be the case. While water temperature is unknown to me, the oil temp in the reservoir reads about 180 (perhaps the digital would have been better) when the cooling fan is on.

I guess I will have to just try some chaps and see if that works. I've driven quite a few different bikes and just never had that much heat on the legs. Thanks for the welcomes and for the anwsers.

Don't know if there's much that can be done... but I can tell you that BDU trousers suck for insulating ones legs! That number 3 header pipe is a bit close!

Alternate uses.

I remember back in the good old days, back when bikes had kick starters and the shorter the kick starter the bigger man you were, it was common to stop at the local burger joint and grab a couple of cheeseburgers for the ride home. Problem was keeping the burgs warm so when you got home the fat hadn't coagulated on the wrappers. You stuffed 'em between the jugs (read sportster). Just think of the R3 doing a couple of toasted cheese sandwiches (on white of course) hung behind the radiator on the way home. You actually have an on-board convection oven. Something your spouse would gladly pay thousands for and you got it for free.:D

I have an old pair of unlined chaps that I wear over short pants. The leather deflects the heat better than denim. When I get where I'm going I whip off the chaps and everyone gets to gaze on my beautiful white legs! :p I also keep my right foot up on my highway peg at slow speeds when I can to keep it away from the header.
[When I started this, I had to start wearing my timberline hiking boots. People used to laugh at me with my harness boots and shorts for some reason???????]

Given the inaccuracies of tank mounted oil temperature gages, you are probably fine. Besides, full synthetic lube oils will typically withstand operating temperatures in the excess of 230 degrees before oxidation and chemical breakdown starts to coour. That's why synthetics have an extended drain interval.

My T100, on a hot day will register 210 on the temperature gage with it's probe right in the sump.

Excess heat

Hi, I`m unsure as to whether you actually found a solution to your problem. I`d like to let you know in any case that we are conducting some trials with a set of radiator delectors that may provide a partial cure and give some relief to yourself and others out there.

Even if over heated legs are not a problem they look real nice and be a attractive addition to any Rocket 3 in any case.

HI

I'm from Houston so I feel for you on the heat thing. When I get stuck in trafffic it is nasty hot. Wilber's chap's over shorts is about the best thing you can do.
Also if you take some chicken and rap it in tin foil put it on the top of the mainfold, take your spouse on an hour long cruse you have a nice hot lunch for her when you stop.:D
