gear box really funky all of a sudden.

So.... The problem was a number of the steel plates in the clutch assembly are warped and the clutch would not completely disengage. Has anyone ever heard of this happening, and does anyone know if this is a possible factory warranty issue?

From what I understand and have read, warped clutch plates can be caused by not letting the Rocket warm up initially, and letting the oil circulate into the plates prior to operating it.

Georgia, when your Rocket is cold, do you normally just start the Rocket, and then ride? Or do you let it sit for a couple of minutes at idle, then take off?

Kindest regards,

I do a lot of New York City Cab dodging, so yes on all counts... Lots of low speed traffic, lots of stop and go, lost of "shift up, shift down, shift up, shift down" and lots of jumping on the bike and running around..... sounds like I need to buy a city rat and keep my rocket for my long distance rides. I'll start letting it sit for a couple minutes before I ride off.

outcome: yup the metal plates were all warped. All fixed about $1400 ( but they also replaced some brake pads and did some other tweaks... ) great dealer in Branchville CT... Went up in the rain to see my baby, but left it there for a better day.... Bikes sitting there right now. Looking forward to getting back up to CT and going riding!

thanks for the insights and thoughts guys! :D

yup... i've been considering that very idea. Maybe a used bonneville. I really like the new America. Maybe I'll get one of those.

I can't imagine slinging that beast around in the city, Geo - just too much power for such close quarters. If you're interested in another large cruiser that will stand up to the pounding it will get in the belly of the beast's mean streets, I know where you can get a phenomenal deal $5500-6,000) on an "as new" 2005 Honda VTX 1800 F model over here in Jersey. Until decided to kick it up a notch and get a Rocket, I almost bought it myself. I've owned two of them over the last 6 years and they're quite bulletproof coz' "it's a Honda". Looks just like this but with nice HK straight pipes and gnarly thunder Mfg. teardrop intake + some other bling:http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/Gallery/Honda VTX1800F 05 4.jpg
I couldn't find the same bike similarly equipped and in showroom condition anywhere in the US for less than $7500-8,000!

nice bike.... I have to do a couple more gigs to get enough money up, but I like the idea of the VTX for the city, vs my rocket III, for my daily taxi Slalom...
