busted Crank!

Busted cranshaft!!!!

Thank you all for your support. WARP9.9 They did not tell me where it broke. I don't believe they opened it up. he said he looked in a viewing window and saw the bearings up against the window. I didn't know it had a viewing window .

Havent heard anymore yet, I suspect this will be a lengthy process, however I'll call them Monday see if I can get more specific information. I will keep you all updated on my tale of woes.

Now that is confusing. If the bearings were up in the inspection window I wonder where the end of the crank shaft with the lower timing gear bolt and spacer is. There is only one inspection port I know of and thats the front of the crank on the clutch cover. Should be a no brainer though they will probably order another engine and send that one back to the lab for inspection and some head scratching I suspect.
Cranks can only break by a few means IMO Detonation. rod breakage, Tensioner failing and the chain whip wodding up down on the bottom of the block where the timming gear is on the crank. And well if the tranny locked up bending the input shaft there is a chance it could fracture the crank. Although when my inner clutch hub grenaded locking the drive line and engine up at 80 mph the crank survived. Needed a new input shaft to the tranny though
Oh and a new set of drawers

Spoke to the dealer today....shockingly nothing has happened since I talk to them two weeks ago...Apparently the person that makes the decisions for Triumph on Engine replacement decisions has not been available. They expect him back tomorrow. should be hearing something soon. Warp9.9 they said they don't know where the crank broke at yet, still haven't opened it up.

Does anyone know if they extend the warranty on cases where the bike spends so much time in the dealer. This now has logged 6 weeks out of the last twelve.
 
WOW! This story is beginning to sound like the guy with the busted gear shift detent spring. Hopefully this is not a trend for Triumph to drag out repairs on major items! Six weeks! That's ridicules!

My Bad it's logged 6 weeks out of twelve months total. 4 weeks with me taking it to two different dealers for the rattle can noise which they never heard and did not fix. And now two weeks since the Crank Broke. I don't want to make this sound worse than it is. Sorry for the confusion Muleskinner.
 
My guess is you are in early, early days mate ... this stuff takes an annoyingly long time if Triumph US is anything like there Aussie counterpart. Seems to get bounced from one to another until you start jumping up and down.. and in my case inform them i was going to jump on a plane and sort it out face to face. Ball that was rolling seemed to pick up pace after that
 
tell them you want a new bike then you will have matching numbers on motor and frame
 
Sorry to hear bout your bike. My good mate had a crank break on his 04 Rocket. We had a look inside the front case an there was a piece broke of the front of the crank where the woodruf key locates. The gear was in two bits ,broken at the wood ruf key slot. It had wrecked the valves ect. The bike was out of warranty.TRIUMPH decided that they would replace the parts FOC but he had to pay for labour. Only thing was they didn't have a new crank and he had to wait until they placed an order to their supplier to get an extra one in their next production run. I ain't got any pics of the damage for Warp, (I know he likes to examine these things!) Hope you get things sorted ok . Seein your still in Warranty I would hope they replace your engine. Al.
 

AH that is good about Triumph helping out on such a alod bike I have a opinion one how the crank broke but will hold it until more information and pictures are available. Your right Kipper I would like to get a look see especially if the break is after the keyway and bolt that goes thru the lower gear I am interested strictly from a metallurgical view I doubt very much if it broke there. If it is in the keyway on the front which is a square key not a wouldruff key seat I have a good ides as to the culprit. now the back of the crank does actually have a woodruff keyseat in it for holding the alternator/ crank positonal locator for the crank sensor it is very large back there. If memory serves me right, I think Echo Cycle was the only one so far that has been able to break the crank back there.
