I've seen some pictures and have been thinking about blacking out just the grill on my touring. I believe the look appeals to me more. I know some have painted theirs, but I would like something a little tougher. I would prefer not to have to be touching it up if the chrome breaks through in spots. I guess the up side is if I change my mind I can always strip it and go back to chrome.

Has anyone powder coated theirs and does it hold up without chiping considering all the bugs and all the other crap hitting it? If it is going to chip, I guess I might as well paint even though I prefer not to. If you have pictures of yours, I would like to see.

If the Touring ones are the same as the roadster, they are some sort of plastic and I don't know if they would hold up to the heat of powder coating. I used Plasti-dip to black out mine and they look perfect after two riding seasons.

Really?......I guess I'll have to take another look. I've looked at it and always thought it was metal. Maybe I'll have to take it off to be sure and then I will be halfway there to doing the job as well. Did you prime it first then spray it? Has it faded or become drab over time?

The grill itself is steel on the Standards/Roadsters . the shroud is chromed plastic. I've had the grill powder coated black for years , no worries.

Painting isn't as durable as powder coating but I painted mine and only touched it up twice - first time after 3 years; second time to tart it up to sell. To be honest it really didn't need either re coat. Total cost about $5 and less than 5 mins to take out and put back. Pics in photo album. I did the back 2 as well and never redid those.
