3 K&N's and no cat 2007 Classic

So my conclusion is, nobody has tried no cat with stock exhaust, 3 k&n's and butterflies removed using Triumph's max power download. Well I guess I will learn on my own.
I just thought with all the good experience on this site someone would know the answer.

My handbook ( early '05) says to use 89 but I've always run 87 with no problems with power or detonation. Some countries use different ratings for octane, Oz for example is about 95 for what N. Americans call 89. I would suspect that pinging might be a sign of a lean condition. Quite a few have run the bypass with the standard pipes and a factory tune was good enough but with the extra flow of the 3 K & N's it might be on the edge? If that is the case I would hesitate to remove the secondary butterflies until I had a Tuneboy to fatten it up a bit.
Re: your post above. Triumph uses the secondaries to richen up some of their "max power" tunes by closing them slightly even at high revs. If you download the tuneboy software you can see this graphically. Anyone can download and become familiar with Tuneboy free. You can view the tunes and see which ones do what . You just can't hook up to the bike and change anything until you buy the cable.

Just be sure to 12-minute it.

You seem to have been treated horribly on this thread for no good reason... First of all, invest in Tuneboy... If you are going to jack your bike up, it is the tool to have.. Go to this link on the Tuneboy site:

http://www.tuneboy.com.au/TuneDownloads/Tunes.html

Scroll down and download tune 20050_3... This is the closest tune to your target hardware configuration... Flow of the K&Ns and Unis are about the same... The TORs don't push a whole lot more exhaust than the stock pipes... I ran 20050_2 with stock pipes for over a year with no problems... You should go to a dyno tuner to get an exact tune for you bike since all bikes and dynos are different... But this will get you close enough and be safe for you bike... Any of the Triumph "performance" tunes assume a stock air filter and will run your bike too lean with your configuration.. May also be the source of the pinging you are hearing... That is not good for your engine...

Mike....

My apologies for the rude answer you got...some of us get cranky at times, particularly when the weather is infavorable to riding.

I've been using 87 octane since day 1 without any discernable degradation of performance, but I'm just an everyday rider. Some of the real motor heads here trying to squeeze out the last amount of oomph...89 or 92 octane for them.

I know what you mean, there is not enough hours in the day. I can never leave nothing alone. My last bike a Harley Bagger, I was getting 121 horse out of it on 91 octane. One road test on a Rocket and the Harley was gone.....I told myself I was going to leave it alone........
As a former Drag Racer that ran a funny car and pro stock, there is a constant need for speed.
I plan on doing tune boy but just don't want to spend any more money now if I don't have to. From what I see the tune boy is very close to Harley's Race Tuner and should be a breeze to work with.

I run 89 octane as the manuel suggests.

Tune Boy will come in handy when you want to get the most out of your set up.

As long as it's running well and not backfiring and you're smiling . . . run it! :D

Well I have been running it now for a couple of weeks with Triumph download, it is lean but tolerable. I have ordered and received a new Tune Boy, will be adding it and making appointment for dyno tune.

After doing some more research I also just ordered o2 eliminator from Dyno Jet. I plan on removing and installing plug in o2 hole and attaching o2 bypass plug. I will use "canned custom" Tune Boy tune untill I get into dyno shop. I shimmed out bearclaw using 1/3" spacers and using 1/2" black foam heat duct spacer/tape glued to side of gas tank to fill the gap between tank and claw, it looks factory. The "air noise" using 3 k&n's only took 2 days to get used to [the sound of power!]. 8)

Jeepster-you can return the Dynojet eliminator, the TB has the ability to turn it off completely (for free) so it is a non-issue. Some folks here still recommend removing it so it doesn't get fouled since it no longer gets an eletrical charge (I'm not sure if that still holds true, and you will need some type of bung to cover the exhaust hole).

I ran the combo (to include the removal of the secondaries) you stated you have briefly (the day before I put on full Jardines, and limped to my Dynojet shop to get a full map).

It was brutally fast, and the engine reved so quickly in the lower gears, to this day first gear is nearly impossible to go wide open throttle before it's time to shift in second...it never pinged, but I knew I'd feel a lot better once she was dynoed. FWIW, my current combination nets me 150/160 RWHP/TQ
.
I have never heard my R3 ping (or any for that matter), even in 100+ degree heat-but from the above combo I would say it still needs a fueler (tuneboy or PowerCommander)to be safe.

I cannot endorse either 3 KN or Jars/preds w/o a fueler (let alone both like some run).

I would run higher octane fuel as a minimum-and mauybe some sea foam or techron-some type of deposit cleaner in case you suffer from deposits. The pinging is more than likely indicitive of a lean condition under certain load/rpms.

The stock R3 EFI system can only make small mod changes, but definitely cannot come up with the fuel to cover 10 RWHP mods, let alone 20+

I guess you can keep checking your plugs and guess you are not lean, but I'd be additionally careful of high heat, high load (like two up, or riding with gear, etc) as this will further load up the engine.

Also, higher octane actually contains "less gas" so you are not getting more fuel, just fuel that is more resistant to detonation.

Good luck.
