transmission noise!!

You should have shocked the castle nut with a brass drift as it would have come right off with a standard ratchet. Glad you got it off though.

The starter motor changes out real easy. you should open up the other plate and inspect the copper contacts it might need some cleaning up so it gets a better contact to launch the bendix. I used a file on mine to clean her up.

Hey put a plastic bag around the shaft spline and tape it to keep dirt and grime out of the grease. I always cover up anything like that. Just trying to help and good luck.

'Tis remarkable what the rest of us take for granted and ignore, much as an ostrich with head in the sand.

Looking at the photos, particularly the dry drive surfaces, I wonder if there is a list of "what the factory might have forgotten" that, as painful as it might be, should be opened and performed, with the hopes of having a better chance of joining those ranks of responders to common issues "I have this model and these many miles, and I've never had a problem" ?

Reminds me of stories I heard from people who were active in the forties and fifties talking about finding out what day of the week a car was built and avoiding certain build days for the potential of inferior build quality.

I don't mean to pollute this fine, substantial thread -- just trying to gain the benefit of folks who have "been there done that" as opposed to posers.

I echo the "it's a wonderful group" sentiment (and applause).

One think for sure Joe is on this site there is a lot of information no matter what my bet is someone has done it and is will to share the information. Since yours is new it will be a while before you really do a lot of maintenance on her. One thing you should remember is every time you change the tire or once a year if you ride a good bunch you should remove the differential and grease the splines with Honda Moly60. Unless you purchase some MolyKote most use the Honda Moly60 because it is so readily available. a tube will last you a couple two or three years. Triumph does not have this in the maintenance schedule but you should do it so you do not have to buy a new differential and drive shaft.

Now back on topic

Looks like your a about half way there now and doing good. It won't be long and you will be thrashing the Green Machine again

can you clarify your statement "opening the other plates" where is this other plate remember I am NOT a mechanically savvy rider and a lot of what is considered mundane to some is ancien chinese to me . I know I have to change the bendix rod and re use the older one when I swap starter but I do not know where these copper contacts you talk about are located

At this point Patrick you can grab the drive shaft and pull straight back and it will slide off the front spline. Then you can put it somewhere out of the way. Slob up that front spline with moly when you put it back together.
