Transmission Failure

It is just popping out of 2nd gear under hard accelloration and it has to get over 4,500 rpm before it pops. No other gears involved. The previos owner said it had been doing this for about 8,000 miles. I was wondering if going into the detent spring would solve the problem. How do you go about replacing the detent spring ? Would this be a worthwhile endever to try ?

After reading this info I don't think it has anything to do with the detent spring ,just my opinion if you revved the bike to 4500 rpm,s with a broken detent spring and you changed gear or it popped out of gear there's a good change the situation could be disastrous and I doubt whether you could have ridden for another 8000 miles

Yes I am aware this is an old thread. I wanted to talk about this since I just purchased a 2006 Classic for about one third of its value due to the 2nd gear popping out. The PO said he could not get Triumph to step up and install an upgrade kit. I'm only repeating what the previous owner told me when I purchased it. I take a man at his word until it is proven differently. I don't think he was lying. This bike has 17,500 on it. It also has something over $3000 in upgrades and accessories on it. I purchased it for $3000 USD plus $850 shipping.

My 09 had some issues at about 10,000 ks my shifter would pop out of gear or sometimes be hard to get out of second gear took it into triumph and the put the upgrade kit through her and she has been smooth as a whistle ever since. Triumph covered the cost under warrantee

Given your very cheap purchase price, get the dealer to cost the kit and the install.
I recall numbers in the $5K range for this.
If the bike is nice, total cost is in line with its value when your done.

My 05 Std, in 2009.. Triumph supplied my kit free but the Steeler said they wouldn't cover the labour so I paid up 20 hrs @ A$80 hr back then.. bike has had no major issues since then, just detent spring a few moths ago. :)

My local Triumph shop is working with the factory rep on the upgrade kit and install. They just spoke about it Thursday afternoon. We are waiting for the rep to get back to him. As a back up I had the shop quote me the repair for the second gear pop out problem. The service writer said they have fixed 3 bikes with this problem in the last year and he could do the parts and labor for $700. I was pleasantly surprised. And I get a15% discount on top of that because of my BRAT Club Membership there.
