I had a similar one on my cars back in the 80's got link for this bike one and what is the filter medium (the car one used a Toilet roll, no I am not Kidding and it worked well)

on a late ford they have a for lack of better word toilet paper filter in the cooling line to catch debree going into the cooler and back to the trans. now i agree that it will catch smaller particals better but the out side area will plug faster than the pleated filters. so if u getting enough material the toilet paper filter will plug first and then by pass to pump material trough the trans or engine. when i rebuild one of those trans i use the pleated filter
its interesting to unroll one of them and see how it traps the metal.

Doesn't the oil flow through the end of the roll with the multiple ends of each wrap being the entry point rather than through the side of the roll to the hollow center?

I have a Chromed metal Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter one (see below) that suits remote inline mounting (like an oil cooler does) that I have never used, but thought as they originated in the 1960's or earlier they were surpassed by later finer micron screening in quality disposable filters.

Looks like they are still around since 1953 and claim to be better than modern ones (as they would) with a 100,000 mile change interval with full synthetic oil:
:eek:o_Oo_O:unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure::unsure::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::whitstling::whitstling::whitstling::whitstling: haven't they heard of oxidation! That may suit a diesel truck engine that is rarely turned off and could do that mileage in a year - BUT for a bike!!!!

This guy gassed250 nailed it about an hours read into the thread
"The TP filter may be good for removing very fine particles but there's no point in worrying about particles smaller than 20 microns (1/5th the thickness of human hair) as particles this size wont cause any wear in an engine with good oil pressure.
Most engines will have around .0015" to .0025" bearing clearance, so there should be a film of oil 38 to 64 micron thick between moving parts ( with good oil pressure)
Any pleated media filter is more than capable of removing particles that may cause wear, so very fine particles would be able to pass between moving parts without contacting with both surfaces

One thing that all filters fail to do is remove corrosive liquid contaminants (fuel/acids) that degrade the lubricating properties of oil and its these contaminants that do the most damage to bearings and low friction coatings etc

Your TP filter may make the oil look clean but its still full of liquid contaminants

The oil filter that I have on my Ford 351 is even cheaper to maintain than your TP filter, Its a 20 micron pleated stainless media filter that is fully serviceable, all I need to do is open it up drain the oil and then wash it out with some dishwashing liquid, no need to replace the filter media EVER and no need to dispose of a big lump of oily dunny paper"

Q&A
Can't I still use any brand or type of TP for my Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter?

Most toilet rolls are no longer suitable because they are wound too loosely or are embossed resulting in poor filtration. For optimal performance of the Frantz oil cleaner/filter we recommend buying Frantz replacement elements which are specifically manfactured to achieve the best filtration.

What is the filter element made of?

The Frantz Filter element is made from a special grade of cellulose fibre and is densely compacted to provide effective sub-micron filtration.

Could rig it up off the oil cooler I suppose and mount to the front tipover bar but sure it would look crap.

This Frantz Filter kit comes with a Quart of Hot Shot’s Secret TBN Booster to replenish detergents. This kit provides an extended drain interval of 50,000 miles.

The chart shown, is a result of a 3rd party oil analysis conducted by Blackstone Laboratories. These numbers come from a 6.0 L Powerstroke F-350 with over 215,000 miles.
The initial sample was drawn from the dirty motor oil that had been run for 4,711 miles, and was close to its next scheduled oil change. The test revealed 41,182 contaminating particles at 2 microns in just this small sample.
The next sample was drawn from the same dirty oil (without being changed) after adding a Frantz Filter for just 200 miles. This test revealed just 1,641 contaminating particles at 2 microns. That is a 96% decrease in contamination after just 200 miles!
The final sample taken was from brand new Shell Rotella Motor Oil, which revealed 1,818 contaminating particles at 2 microns. When comparing the analysis of running dirty oil through the Frantz Filter for 200 miles to the analysis of brand new oil, it is evident that the Frantz Filter keeps your oil analytically cleaner than brand new oil.

most filters flows from the outside in. a lot of filters has a one way diafram in them so if u hook it up with the WRONG FLOW it will cause major damage. on my chey i put a hd magnet between the eng & filter and remove it when changing oil&filter.
in stalling a system like that is a waste of money and could cause problems. jmo

yes but is your engine not worth it!

By using A quality oil filter I am confident that the engine is safe from failure due to contaminated oil,I change the oil At half the Recommended interval and use quality oil ,the oils of today are far superior to the oils of yesterday with 6 litres in the comparatively small engine that's water cooled ,slow reving and under stressed I don't think the oil is under extreme stress that requires any more than the oil filter the engineers have called for ,BUT, like more frequent oil and filter changes a "better filter" will not hurt
