Oil conversations are always entertaining. Assuming that the proper classification of oil has been used and proper change intervals observed, has anyone ever heard of an oil related failure in a Rocket 3?

I sometimes wonder if some of the failures were caused by straying away from the recommended 15/50 or now 10/50. 10/40 may not be enough to handle the heat.

@Idaho Red Rocket 3, I thought the recommended weights were either 10w40 or 15w50? I'm about to take a trip and was just planning an oil change. I'm in TN so it doesn't get aggressively cold... do you run 15w50 for the higher heat application?

Oil seems to be a continuing topic on all motorcycle forums, regardless of make. I changed the break in oil on my 07 Classic at 500 miles as was recommended by Triumph. The Triumph dealership in Pensacola, FL where I bought it, was closed during Daytona Bike because the owner's son races there during that time. I needed to get it changed because I'd be riding to Bike Week too within a couple of days. I called the owner out at the track and he asked if I could do the first oil change and he'd do the rest of the service upon his return. He had one of his guys open up the shop to give me the required oil. When I dumped the break in oil it was dark black so I would never let it go over that.

I used 10-40 synthetic every 5000 miles in all heat ranges, from the Pacific Northwest into the Southwest during summer, until I passed the bike on to my son a couple of years ago. It had about 36K on it and still didn't use any oil. Even at 5000 mile changes the synthetic still looked pretty good and it never used any oil. If my memory serves me right the owners manual recommends either a semi-synthetic or full synthetic.

An interesting point I just found out with my Kawasaki Nomad is that Kawasaki recommends using regular oil for the first 20000, not to break the engine in but rather the transmission gears. This got me wondering if that would be worthwhile to also do on a Rocket but with a semi-synthetic rather than a full syn.

For what it is worth, we put an engine together, pour in the 300V, map it on the dyno and send out out the door. Never ever had an issue with running in.Also in the owners manual there is a lubrication chart, if one is to read it it will tell you what grade of oil to use for the temp range you run your bike at.

I don't think Triumph does their homework. My owners manual says Castrol full syn 10/40 or 15/50 but castrol does not make a 15/50 they make a 10/50 and a 20/50. My dealer ( not just a triumph dealer) uses motul 10/50 full syn year round pricey ( more than double the price of Castrol) but very good oil.

I agree, it is my understanding they are recommending Castrol 10/50 RS 4T Synthetic.

Early Rockets like mine ran on Mobil 1 15/50 that was made in Europe. Triumph had a falling out with Mobil 1 and switched to Castrol 10/50.

If you can find a good 4T full syn 15/50 go for it. Otherwise the Castrol 10/50 is the way to go. It is my belief that 40 weight is just not enough to handle the heat of our engines.

Slightly off topic -
Is the Purolator Synthetic PSL14610 the oil filter???
