When it's all said and done, I wonder what "new" level of the average cost of a gallon of regular is going to stabilize at.

Up to around AU$1.50 per litre here for 98 octane ($5.70/US gallon or $6.80/imp gallon). I paid $1.48 this morning. Around AU$1.35 for a litre of 91 octane.
