Fuel Gauge shows empty at half tank

ive had mine back to the dealer 5 times
and they still cant get it right
dummy lite is much closer
in my opinion fuel gauge is a waste of money
 
HeR3tic, I can take your word for it, especially as I don't have access to my owner's manual. What I think I have always quoted on the 6.3 is because the Triumph website list the fuel capacity for both the Classic and the Standard at that amount (24L).

mine comes on with about 50 miles left. or at about 150 done.
I really don't know or care what that amounts to, all I know is I have a 50 mile reserve, and I can live with that.
Of course, it use to come on at about 110 miles or thereabouts, but once I bent the float lever down a little bit, its just about right now.
 
UK Gallons to USA Gallons conversion.

People in here say the R3T has a 5.9 gallon tank. The owners manual says 4.9. My fuel gauge says empty when approximately 4.9 is consumed. I'm not sure what to believe. Go figure. I suppose the one sure fire way to tell would be to siphon the gas out of the tank and fill it back up (I have a 5 gallon container) and see how much the old girl will hold.

I believe that the problem is the same issue that brought down the Mars probe, units.

Triumph is a UK company. If you google unit conversion from UK Gal to USA Gal, you'll find that 4.8 gal UK= 5.88 gal USA. I believe that the tank sizes are similar between the standard/classic and touring model, but the touring model uses up some of the space for the speedometer and display.

I can approximately validate this empirically:
I got gas and put 4 gal in the tank. I had gone 132 miles for a MPG of 33. The computer estimated that I had 55 miles left to go. If it was basing it's calculations on the MPH for the 4 gal I burned, that means it thinks I had 1.66 gal left to go. 4 gal burned plus 1.66 remaining gives you 5.66 gal total. Allow for a small error and/or conservativeness on the part of the computer calculations and you have your 5.88 gal capacity. (I did say "approximately") :)

But seeing as yours is saying you are close to empty at 4.9, I'd say it's a good idea to do the siphon thing. I believe you will find that it's close to 5.88 though. Let us know.

Rocket III Touring Fuel Sensor Tune Fix

Here's an update of the fuel gauge tune my dealer recently performed to fix the poor gauge readings. It was considered a warranty fix.

I filled the tank upon leaving the dealer (San Diego Rocket Motorcycles). I think the Touring has a 6.5 gallon capacity.

I hit reserve at 165 miles (the gauge reflected 50 miles left to empty).

I rode another 50 miles until the gauge showed zero (0) miles until empty. I went another 10 miles on "empty" until I reached a gas station.

At 225 miles (per the gauge) I filled the tank; the receipt shows I added 6.469 gallons, so I was pretty much empty at that time.

This experiment showed that the fuel gauge tune that the dealer performed worked well. It appears the gauge is pretty accurate now.

I hope this helps someone.
 
it really ain't that hard to pull the tank off and adjust the float lever.
Takes longer to get the gas siphoned out than to remove the float and adjust it.
One hour job total if you ain't ever done it or had the tank off before.
A word of advice before anyone starts this project though.
Get some small hose clamps, cause the Triumph ones are crimped on the fuel lines.
They'll be buggered up and not work anymore once you get them off.
Next, use a paint pen, tape, something to mark the position of all the hookups,
and lines you'll be removing so they can go back on without any trouble,
and in their correct positions.

yea, I've noticed I have got alot worse mileage since I removed the secondaries,
installed the GiPro, and the DoBeck.
But DANG, what an improvment in performance..:eek:
Besides, who cares about mileage,:cool:
I ain't trying to "go green" or save the earth by my little bit of gas usage.
It is what it is, 22 MPG, who cares.
Besides, every hundred miles or so,
I need to take a leak and get a smoke anyway.;)
 
I think most of the problem is the tendancy to yank open the throttle for now reason other than the feel. I don't just putter around or accelerate with traffic. It's more like when flogging a boat, wide open or off.
