Custom Pipes are In!

Have you still got your original pipes???
Might not be what you wanted but if you stick them back on at least you can still ride for this summer.

No, I had to use the headers from the original pipes to have these made up. The new pipes are welded right up an inch or so down the original headers. If you look close, you can see.

Slaphead/ Travelguy.

That's a horny set of pipes you've got there. I'm only viewing a small pic on a 10" laptop but I had to have a second look to see the heat sheilds at all.
Is it a one piece shield from top to tail??? Looks great.

Sam. your attention to detail is exceptional. I've only ever had the pleasure of seeing 1 set of your pipes in the flesh. Not too many in Oz and none of them are anywhere near me.

Wish I knew how to enlarge forum pics to full screen. I'd love to see that workmanship up closer.

Cobba, yes Sam done a double skin heat shield, one piece full length chromex finish..Superb jobbie :)

Sam----"my humble apology to my favorite pipe guy--travelguy"!!!!!!!!
didn't know ya had done slaphead pipes til i went back thru thread tonite.
is there a thread on slaphead pipes?? ---if not-ya'll need ta get one goin!!! SOUND included!!

Desert----tha way r3 motor mounts ta wishbone frame "makes it" integral part 'a frame. vs--single backbone harley frame where motor is usually rubber mounted to it. lots mo stress on "hangin" hot pipe on r3 when ya hit potholes. etc.......crack=blowed valve...etc. 2 mount points fix that. right-or-wrong --that's my thankin!!

Sam---what's w/ carpenter pipes???
---blue-blue-blue on #1

Its comfortable enough. 6'1 300#.. might switch to a set of Biltwell Zeds, not sure yet. As for a dyno run... it is going to cost $500.00 - $600.00 to get her run and mapped out on the dyno. Guy says 500 minimum with stock ECU. I simply don't have it right now after spending $2200 on a sick dog at the vet and my own medical crap. It looks like I probably won't be riding her before I can get a dyno run because I can't get a decent tune at all. I don't anticipate being able to afford that until close to next winter. She'll remain shut up in the garage until then, and I'll wish I could be riding. Sorry I can't get a dyno sheet to share.

As to the folks saying they need reinforcing - I have had other bikes with pipes much the same with THOUSANDS of miles without cracking or breaking - why should these be any different? They don't weigh much at all, and I highly doubt they are going to break off at the head or break the studs.

They DO have backpressure. I have them baffled with a set of BCT style baffles. They add backpressure, and make the sound a lot deeper in person than it is in the video. Also, it is correct - these pipes weren't made to be "best performance" but they will certainly not rob the bike of much as they are not really open drag pipes.

Third - as to the heat. They REALLY don't get that hot, especially now they're wrapped. However, I think I soak some of the heat up w/ my cowboy boots .. never really noticed it the few times I took her out for a test ride.

Hey, the most important thing of all is that your dog gets better, wolf.;)

Believe me when i say that the only person that you have to please with how you kit your bike is you.

The dyno info would be nice to know, but its not all that important unless you're going to market your creation.

Good luck and good riding!

phil---ya outa run fer office !!

ya is all fer dyno stats initially---now ya just want ta make sure dog is ok !! ha!! i'm voting fer ya!!

on the only proper color for the r3 -chick magnet blue- john... created a perforated ss screen and a braided ss baffles for them.. there is also a "balanacer" connector tube between them that is covered by the 1 piece shield.. that shield was "fun" to make.. about 18 hours to make that shield .. finish grind and double wall it

Got a video of (sort of) the pipes sound with some throttle. I was right at the last dregs in the gas-tank, so she didn't want to run at all... I'll get a better video another time with my actual camera instead of my ****ty phone. Have been futzing with the tune this morning after working a long graveyard shift, so don't listen to me muttering about it being lean at the end.

The Jardines tune is lean, and the bike does not like it. The Preds tune I have seems too rich, so I need to find a balance between the two. Totally trying to avoid having to come up with 500 for the Dyno, so I can ride sometime before six to eight months from now.
