33K, Driveshaft Replacement

Almost an even trade and extra Rocket III parts will appear on the Classified section if I go through with this or a Scrambler.

Bye for now.

At about 18,000 miles the front differential seal started leaking. Took it to two Triumph dealers within the next year three times. One for TPS and the others to have them look at the leak. Both times they told me that they need the bike for two to three weeks and that it is not covered under the recall of the same problem. Triumph has file a report with the feds saying that all bikes have been repaired. BS. Found a 1500 mile rear swing arm, differential assembly and rear wheel on ebay. At 34,000 finally put it on. Found the drive shaft and diff splines showing wear and rusty. No lube on the splines. Put enough lube on that I think it may start running out of the drain slot. Feels just like before but with out the mess every ride.

PS: I ride 70% of the time two up and at the max weight of the bike. Been on a darkside for just about three years now and love the torque. The tires show it.

Whats there to imagine, I have 58000 miles on my bike 30,000 on the Blower kit and over 7500 miles on the Carpenter goodies, With extra stuff like Titainium intake vales and seats made from Unobtainium (NASA material) Crower rods and still the blower kit. I lubricate mine and hae not had the problem. I am surprised that even the oil in the rear differential looks new everytime I change it.

I am prepared to replace it, as most likely the Horse Power and Torque I throw at mine is unmatched by any Rocket on the planet.:D

Wow that sounds like a lot of money to put into a Rocket to me! For $14,000.00 OTD I can buy a brand new ZX14 or a Busa and have a bunch of fun. Add a PCV and an A/T, exhaust system and some intake mods and you have a lot of bike for the bucks. How much money do you have invested into your bike now?

The Millenium Falcon loves ZX-14's and busa's they are crunchy and taste like peanut butter:D

You can add all them goodies to a new busa and one thing will remain the same. At 186mph it will hit the speed limiter one which can not be altered. Me I will just have shifted into 5th gear:cool:

And yet when I take off and ride 700 miles in one day I am a tad bit more compfortable then riding a pogo stick:D

As for the money I have into mine, I do all my wrenching which adds to the savings and the fun with my hobbie. I would say about 10 k more then a new one. But then I have two so what would I do with a third one?

Good Lord, go in the bathroom and see whose is biggest OK. Just put mine on Craigslist. Bike, Corbin fairing and bags, custom trailer hitch and new, never used trailer for $11K. I do not like the fact that Triumph has S**t components and I have been with them off and on since 1973. I feel a divorce comin on.

Joesey it aint about who's bigger anyone who owns a 800 lb Rocket is bigger. I am sorry for the peopel who have not read about greasing the splines as a maintenance procedure that needed to be done when it was discussed a years ago on this site and the .com site. With all the Rockets that have been sold I think the percentage of damaged driveshafts would still be a low number. Although any failures can suck no matter what. I have been down that road a couple times now finding the next weak link

You have anice stead hope you hang onto her or enjoy your next ride.

Speed limiter,,,,what's that? An easy fix. Anyone with a sport bike has, or should have, deleted the speed limiter. As for the Rocket, in any form, I would not want to go 186MPH on one! I've been to 175 on my 05 ZX12R. I would not want to try it on a Rocket! The bike just ain't built for that kind of speed. No matter how much motor you have!

I think you might find that the busa's have changed. Much like Triumph is changing. From what I hear and I am not buying one t find out. The Speed limiter can no longer be overroad as with ours. Who knows whats going to happen with Triumph and the dual ecu's.

as for whether your comfy on a Rocket at 175 its up to the pilot to decide. Mind is pretty wild at that speed but mellows out when you put her in fifth gear. Its a to each his own deal there I only venture up there to do fueling and boost tests.

anyway its what I built the bike to do while still maintaining the bagger criuser style If I wanted a sport bike style it would be different.

But the whole point of me posting was because of how the drive shaft is holding up with excess horse power and proper lubrication.

Read the posts from years ago to find out that once again triumph didn't consider what maintenance should be done at what intervals! What about a rocker owner that is not a memeber of a site? How are they supposed to know what to grease? The average owner assumes the dealers who service the bike on a regular basis is doing the correct service. If triumph does not call for it how are they supposed to know??? That is the friggin point!!! Now Ime done explaining what should not even be an issue!

I hvae bypassed the ignition switch after it failed, my fault and I know that. I have had the "paint can rattle" repaired, Triumphs fault, I am now replacing a driveshaft at 33,000 miles and the fault of that lies somewhere between us. What do you folks that pull trailers think about this ? How much does the additional pull contribute to shearing off the splines on your driveshafts ? Are you going to check ? Any other Dark Side riders experiencing this issue ?

The bike is still on Craigslist and may hit FleaBay soon. I do not respond well to piss poor peformance. If this was a truck, it would be gone too. A woman.............well been down that road, and if I got the piss poor service I have with Triumph from a restaurant I wouldn"t go back.

First Bonneville in 1973. That was 33 years and several other Triumphs before I bought this Rocket. I stayed with them, they left me.
