what's wrong?

I don't get anyone claiming to be a mechanic, but can't work on this bike 'because it's a Triumph'. Not just this guy, there have been more.. The Rocket is no technological ground breaker... It's an inline, double overhead cam internal combustion engine. Last I looked, I didn't see anything like a Flux Capacitor or nuclear power plant installed! It's the same engine configuration as most bikes out there since, oh.. about 1972.. of course, there were DOHC motors before that, but that's when they really hit the mainstream with the Kawasaki Z1.

I agree with Pres10.. :) It was starting to sound like. " I have this 'friend' and he kind of took his bike apart and when he did, I... I mean, He.. couldn't get my bike together.. Oh, did I say 'my'? I meant His.. lol "

My guess is no insurance involved. Somebody has a Rocket III, did some reading on forums and got the idea to remove throttle secondaries and accidentally dropped something into one of the throttle bores. Who knows what, maybe a screw perhaps a small tool bit. Rode for a short while, idling at a stop light, hit the throttle and whatever it was found it's way thru an intake valve. Thats what bent a spark plug. Either that or he installed new plugs and put the wrong ones in and one hit a piston.

There is no way the piston could hit the plug unless the plug is too long.
Valves? No way for them to hit the plug even if the timing chain jumps. They could hit the piston but not plugs. If valves are bent or broken there would be much more than a "tinging" noise.

The guy screwed his bike up and wanted help but would not admit what really happened.[/QUO]

Pres you are good that is some serious Sherlok Holmes stuff you just figured out. :D

Man, you guys crack me up.......im proud to be a crew member here cos theres never a dull moment with you f#^*%rs.:D

Hi mb460

i do work for ins. co. sometimes and most of the time they want pictures of the broken parts before they will pay. some ins. co. are really good and some are bad.
for what it is worth i had a old bsa that i over reved and it streched the rod at piston pin area. it was making a clunking sound. i reved it up to see what would happen and the rod broke and the piston slammed the top of the head.
i have never tried this but if all the plugs were out you might be able to rotate eng. by turning the rear wheel in the higher gears. you might be able to hear something,or if the rod is bad the piston might stay at the top longer.
i know it is hard to work on jobs that people has worked on but sometimes after talking to them several times i hear i lent it to my son last night. or i ask if anybody pulled down into low gear above 15mph and the wife takes two steps back and points to her husband. or OH BY THE WAY!
i hope i am not wasting my time typing with two fingers and if you fix it i would kike to know what was wrong with it.

**** IT.. i knew i'd get ******* trolls on this forum who would feel the need to talk **** because they can't ******* help with the issue or even ask intelligent enough questions to help me diagnose it myself... **** all of you except the one guy who actually attempted to help. i'm done... you guys are pieces of **** looking to get a ******* reaction out of me, well you got it... **** YOU.

---- scratch that.. 2 people... thanks

Sounds like a loose nut or bolt has found it's way into the intake. It could still be in there so be careful turning the engine over. I would recommend using an inspection cam to check for a foreign object in the cylinder space.

I think we are on the something with the loose nut... I don't think its in the intake I think its working on the Bike  But seriously it does sound like an I D 10 T Error to me. :D

BBTW @$$ Wipe ... Does it have Gas in it ?

You need to check and see If it has the right plugs in it. as that is a viable reason to bend the plug shut. Next see if it still has the secondaries. easy if it has triple filters. If your in the states you need to go to Harbor freight and get a scope and scope the cylinders to look at the pistons and see if the is any FOD in them. buy th eexpensive one as the cheaper one will not fit in the plug holes.
