most water pumps have to bushings (or bearings) they also have two seals that keep dirt and water from entering when the rear seal goes bad the water from the engine leaks out of the weep hole. if it didn"t have a weep hole the water would stay on the bushings and make it go bad faster.
if it leaks out the weep hole you have a bad water pump
The weep hole also insures that if the coolant side seal goes bad it doesn't allow coolant into the oil. Instead it goes into a chamber between the coolant and oil seals that has a hole in it called a weep hole. The rocket water pumps have ball bearings in them if anyone was a wonderin'
