I "eyeballed" some slack into the cable at the lever and it does shift smoother. Who da thought? It does make a difference. Im going to do an accurate measurement now. Thanks.
Here are the service manual instructions. When you adjust the free play make sure to measure it. 2-3mm isn't much more than a couple of RCHs put together.

Just want say thanks guys for your guidance. My bike feels like its got a new clutch and transmission. Smooth and no harsh clunks. I think it may have helped with 1st gear popping out too. But we'll see.
When you get a chance you really want to measure it. As Americans we don't know much metric other than a gram or 9mm. Measure it once and try to remember what it looks like, I know I was surprised at how out of spec mine was the first time I measured it rather than eyeballing it.
