Even the cost saving would seem overstated. Robbing hp and torque also means more money on fuel each and every tank. Perhaps just a little but it would add up over the life of the tyre. I've also been told by people using car tyres that the front tyre will scrub out faster.
Then there's the discomfort of having to lean your bike just to go straight if there's any sort of camber - which there is on virtually every road. This I've seen so i know it's so - but the laws of physics dictate it anyway.
