Tales From The Darkside

The darkside has been calling!

Well the dark side has been calling me after my fourth metz in just under 24K miles.
I can't wait to hear how the toyo works out after having a set on a jetta. I was amazed how they handled especially in the rain!

New Toyo-P Today!

Gunshots/Manic:
Just rode the Toyo 235/50 in from a town/interstate ride after the dealer mounted today--all I can say yippie-freakin-yea!! I love it. Was expecting horror at low speed from reading all the internet posts--NO BIG DEAL. My only comment is that the wind was heavy on the interstate and I noticed I was instinctively counterstearing a 'little' bit more, and this was without my Corbin fairing. I'm sold in one ride---I think I picked the right tire and there appears to be 'plenty' of clearance to the swingarm (I'll measure it tonight). I told the dealer to start me at 32psi and measured it 'hot' at 35/36. I may experiment, but no complaints at these pressures--even in curves. All the guys at the shop/dealer wanted me to stop and give a report after the ride...they were surprised by my glee as they have had one rocketeer go back to the Metzler from the darkside.

Thanks to all who have shared info on this forum re: Darkside. I'm a happy man.

I went with the Toyo Proxes in 245/50-16 back in March and have had nothing but good things to say about it. It has rubbed, but only when two-up and only then when we had hit a rather large bump in the road. I run the pressure at 31 lbs cold, I started with 34 psi and adjusted down in 1/2 lb increments until the bike felt right and at it's most stable, went as far as 28.5 but it just kept feeling more mushy in the rear. The week after I mounted the tire and I did mount it BTW, we went on a trip to the Tail of the Dragon with the Road Star Warrior riders forum. I was amazed at the ability of the fat bottomed girl to be able to keep the Warriors in sight what with the car tire on and all and me 2-up, I alone weigh 350lbs, or rather I did. I don't see myself ever mounting another Metzler on this bike.

A-proxes-mate darksider

Gonna order the proxes TODAY! All the money I'll save on rubber, my wife wants me to put towards more life insurance................................jim

Called around to find a proxes and was told that all that was available was the all season tread version. So I ordered the Riken Raptor that I saw mentioned in an earlier post.
They'll have it Monday and the total price including mounting and ballancing is $109. That's half of what I pay for a metz online (M.C.Superstore) and a fourth of what the dealership would want. I'm so happy I could do a burn out and smoke what's left of this overpriced Metz. Just enough time to put few hundred miles on it before Ocean City Bike Week.

How are you darksiders balancing the tire? Are you taking to a bike shop to have it balanced or what. I'll be going darkside in a couple of months.

Biker1059,
My dealership balanced the tire (and mounted). They were good sports about the whole project, I also had some other work performed on the bike at the same time. They did however, require a liability waiver...

I felt so comfortable after the first ride, I took my wife along later that day on the back. I know some may criticize that, but I know when I feel safe & have control of the bike. I'm not making this up either--that I like the way it corners now BETTER than with the Metzler on...
