What sort of an improvement, and where? Or is it the same sort of improvement got by riders convinced that more exhaust noise equals gobs more power?
If you quantifiably increase breathing on one end of an ICE you need do the same on the other end for best results. And then re-jetting or EFI mapping often need be done.

Aesthetically; Three chrome capped K&N's look 'classic'; but the 2780s under the bear claw would better avoid random vandalism.
Performance & simple serviceability; A single, conical K&N at front a 'well designed' plenum.
Absolute DIY servicing simplicity; The OEM set up from Triumph with either paper or K&N filter.
 
First, the triple filters give improved flow, but to get the added power you have to add fuel which means tuning. Also, to take advantage of the increased intake flow, you need increased exhaust flow. You would at least need TORs. If you have them, you would still need a custom tune. With TORs, the triple filters could give an extra 10+ Hp at the top end. BUT...it's all about tuning.
 

I kinda figured all the raves I had read about getting 10+ ponies from air filter mods came with costly exhaust mods and further costly tuning expenses.
For the rider involved in either sanctioned or felonious racing pursuits, or simply seeking a personal best at the local dynamometer I get it. But being that 4000rpm will get me an "Exhibition of speed" in my lower gears, and a "Felony speed" in 5th I question my practical need(s) for 10 more ponies "at the top end".

What then is the price difference in a OEM/replacement paper air filter and a K&N replacement?

Wait until you need to change the plugs or balance the throttles - then you'll VERY quickly discover that using the stock filter position and all that plumbing will show this is MOST certainly NOT the case.
 
Just out of interest, I gather that many who get rid of the original plumbing and so on then have a storage box under the seat. Do you remove the original air box and fit some kind of other box or convert the air box into storage? Been flicking through the service manual and it looks like getting the air box out would be a major PITA. Asking as I intend to fit triple K&Ns over the winter and rather want some storage for stuff than "needs" to be on the bike at all times.
 
You can leave your bike stock if that's the way you want to go, but a good exhaust system, filters and dyno tune will give you around 30% power increase over stock. In my personal experience it makes the bike more satisfying to ride.
 
I didn't say you needed a complete custom exhaust. But unless you have already bought the Triumph TORs, there's really no point in doing anything else, including triple filters. The K&N under seat filter won't result in more power but you shouldn't have to replace it - only clean it.

I can imagine how an obtrusive plenum could make other surrounding tasks and adjustments problematic. I hope such adjustments and replacements are not abnormally frequent in any case.

My K1200R BMW needs the engine coolant drained and a litany of parts removed and an $80.00 gasket to effect a valve tappet check/adjust. Subsequently it's very expensive if done at the stealership. I'm very thankful bucket and shim valve adjustment rarely goes out after break-in.
And it takes the removal of a blinker light and several Tupperware panels to merely access the air filter on the K. "Mass centralization" it's called. Handling wise it definitely works. But it's often daunting, a pain in the back and knees as well as a test of patience for an aging DIY guy with limited facilities.

Too bad K&N doesn't make a single filter that fit over the Rocket's 3 throttle bodies. I guess if they did they'd price it the same or more than three 2780s
 
Is everyone forgetting about the purpose made Ramair for our bikes?
