Removed ram air, installed 2780s

Access to the engine is not a good reason for putting on the triple filters. Removing the plenum is a simple task. The Ramair unit is just a one-piece triple filter. You still have to remove the same stuff to install it. I don't know what the purpose of the Ramair was. Considering the problems they've had with breakage, triple filters are a better way to go. If you think the 2780's don't flow enough, you can use bigger K&N's.

Some people had an issue with the first version of the Ramair splitting at the flange where it tightens at the throttle bodies. The company made their second version with better rubber and from what I have read it is good. I have the first version and have no issues. The air temperature sensor has its own place in it with the extended wiring harness in the kit. All fits under the bear claw.

Good to hear it's a chimp easy install. I'm vacillating on whether to go the 2780s, or simply find the K&N to replace the stock under-seat filter. Paying $$$ for 3 or 4 extra ponies has never been my thing. I truly appreciate the simplicity in servicing of the stock set up, and would like to replace the filter with the re-usable K&N.
A better designed RAM AIR(plenum)with a single conical K&N at front would much interest me if available. Then the beast could have unfettered cold air and I super simple service.
Dont waste your money on the under seat filter. Do it right or dont do it at all.

But pragmatically speaking; Why add TWO more filters to clean at $60 per filter if no sizable power increase is enjoyed over stock arrangement with a single, cleanable K&N? Or is the replacement paper filter priced under $20? If so the cost/mile possibly negates a $60 K&N. I'm a novitiate to Triumph and the R3; but not so horsepower increase and snake-oil claims.

$32.99 per filter at Auto Zone not $60.00 per filter. Made a huge gain in performance, throttle response and fuel mileage. Certainly not a waste of money in any fashion.

Due to the ram air system's history of coming apart, I decided to remove it and replace it with the 2780 K&Ns. Though Tom (the previous owner) did an excellent job of repairing the ram air with silicone (I really don't think it would come apart again), I didn't want to take a chance. I've used K&Ns in many of my vehicles before and I like their filters. These were no exception. Installation was super easy, they look nice, sound good, and I'm sure they flow well. The bearclaw went on with only a little push on the rear filter to get the rear bolt in the hole. I noticed no difference in performance between the two, except the K&Ns howl a bit louder at WOT. I also installed the little K&N filter on the temp sensor and cable tied it under the tank. Tom already had the K&N installed on the PCV tube. I'm all K&Ned up!
Grampi, It appears that FR56 is either wicked anal or cheap. Maybe both. Go with the K&N RU-2780 and 2 of the K&N 62-1340 breathers. $148.95 for all 5 filters at Auto Zone. This is an easy and cheap upgrade with big benefits. Power, throttle response, and fuel economy are all increased to very pleasing levels. Then when you are ready do the exhaust upgrades and you will be riding a completely different Rocket. You will need to do a tune but that is easier than you think. Don't listen to the folks that aren't willing to try it or never have done it. They are either ignorant to upgrades or just like to appear smarter than the rest.

Very helpful; Thank you!
At that price, with the extra room afforded under the tank and elsewhere, and surely colder, better breathing it appeals to my practical, penurious, and lazy DIY side.

I assume there is little market for used OEM plenums.

I tossed my old stuff in the same box with all the other parts I took off the bike. The air box is a great place for all kinds of gear now.

When Tom (the guy I bought it from) had the bike he installed the ram air, TORS, and a crossover pipe from Australia, and had it dyno tuned. I have the dyno run on a memory stick and it did 144 hp and 159 ft lbs rear wheel, so whoever said you'd get a 10 HP gain was a bit low. I highly doubt the 2780s flow any worse than the ram air, so I'm sure they're contributing something to the power gain. Tom already had all 5 of the filters you listed brand new and he gave them to me with the bike. They're all on the bike now...

Thats excellent. You should check the tune or have someone help you get it dialed in. I think you will see some gains in the HP and torque with the correct tune. I just noticed your poor running issue post, has that been corrected?
