R3 rear shocks - last question.. maybe..

I like the Comfort Shocks so much that I am afraid to change. I really want to change to 11.5" shocks to lower the rear a bit, but I know these Comfort Shocks are good so I've never made the change.. I run them on the #2 pre-load setting which is a great all around setting. For hard riding, they could stand to be bumped up to #3, but I just leave then at #2. The damping is very good, but not adjustable like some of the other aftermarket shocks. I would think all Roadsters and Tourings would come with these shocks now.

Below a pic with the difference between Rocket Standard/Classic shocks and Comfort Shocks. The Comfort Shocks have a slightly thinner spring with more coils. Other than that they look the same.

R3 front rear springs/shocks

Guess I'll go with the new 444 progressive. They seem the most advanced. But I didn't see that they had standard and heavy duty, maybe its not needed?

I reckon that's the way I'll end up going if I ever get around to changing. I'm not a particularly heavy guy (80kg/175lb) but I'm not too unhappy with the stock shocks set on 3. Wouldn't mind try something different before I forked out big $, particularly as not everyone seems totally thrilled with the results they've had with pretty much every option. Except the comfort shocks, that is.

Oh man, back & forth, now the comfort shocks sound like a better way to go. Wonder if they are gas shocks like the Progressive, or does it even matter? In the end, the better ride is what counts.

Idea buy the Comfort shocks , see if you like'em .. if not sell them to Canberra for a bit less than what you paid for'em ( assume you're a 'merican) still work out a good deal for Canberra , cheaper than buying them here ..that's what they call a win/win situation. No need to thank me ..all part of the service

For what it is worth I just looked up the 444's that you mentioned and the idea of have an active self adjusting damping, Damping is probably more important than just about anything else the Stock Shocks lack any real damping and if like Richard you are a light weight you might get away with the stock type non adjustable damping but your at the mercy of what they come set at I had Fornales before and would have stuck to them except I wanted the extra ride height they had damping which increased as you added air so it was well balanced I run the Hagon Nitros which has adjustable damping which to me is even more important as I can adjust them up or down a notch depending on the sort of riding and load I am carrying or towing (500kg Camper), I think that if you want something above average you would be hard to go past the 444's or 440 (adjustable damping) or a set of the Hagon Nitros, JMHO but as I said it depends what want? can justify the cost etc

progressive 944's

progressive now makes a new 944 shock. i ordered a pair for my 2013 harley roadglide ultra, which is similar in weight to my 08 rocket III classic. the 944's come in two varieties, the standard which has the spring which will likely be the best choice for the rockets. the heavy duty spring is for those who ride 2 up over 50% of the time. they have the auto dampening feature, and require no tools to adjust the main spring. if they work out well for my roadglide i'll likely get a pair for my rocket III. my r3 classic is annoyingly stiff riding in the rear but i like the front fork suspension just fine. i just don't want to get something that i have to have custom built or adjusted=ohlins. sure they're supposed to be great, as are hagon's, but i just don't want to go to a suspension specialist to get them set up for my weight and my bike. even stock bmw's of the 80's had great suspension and the newer models of triumph have great suspension like the one that's similar to the bmw gs 1200 series bikes. i guess the heavy differential's weight is difficult to control which is probably a lot of the problem. does anyone else have any input on what to select for the right shocks for our rockets? i have the stock set and a pair of triumph's comfort shocks. neither seem to make the suspension work as well as it should.

I was going for the Progressive 444 shocks but had other things pop up. After much research and head scratching I recommend the 444s.

Yes it seems the progressives 444 have the adjustable gas damping, not sure about spring tension though.. I would assume it does.

Where as the comfort shock doesn't seem to have the gas tensioning adjustment. Just the spring tension adjustment. ??
