Project Log: World, meet Scar!

Rob,
Do you have the front forks shown in the original photo?

PS: Looks like it was dropped on its rear while on the pallet.
I'd be wary of possible swing arm damage and check it out closely.

Yep, really the motor is the jewel here, the frame was a bonus buy. Really looking forward to tearing this down to the smallest possible level, measuring all the things and documenting, then building the Rocket triumph should have made!

Initial findings tearing into it are interesting, to say the least. The pre-roadster bikes are, I hate to say this, flat out built better...

It's small things, like the connectors, wire harness quality, bolt torques, etc etc. Everything has a slightly better feel of quality.

Speaking of bolt torques, the swingarm bolts will NOT come undone. I can stack a leg press with 45s and do it easily (it's like 700+lbs), I say that to say, I used my legs to press on the breaker bar while braced against the bike and it will not budge, time for an air hammer and torch. Swings freely, no binding, pretty sure it's just 13 year old hard as rocks, over applied, loctite.:(

The cam ladder bolts broke the bit before cracking loose.

A sign I should stop for the night. Scar is already protesting what's to come lmao.

Valve train looks good, plugs look old but good, intake runners look moderate mileage but not a lot of oily build up. Exhaust side looks about righ, dirty but not horrid or pure night black.

Clutch fibers look good, steels look good, basket, lifter etc all look right.

So far the only bad indicator I can find is the VERY black oil. Head has some strange markings inside of it.

Previous Owner has LEDs on it:rolleyes:

I really wanted to get the head off and get it shipped out asap, but, that'll have to wait on tools apparently, since King Kong assembled it.:D

As I mentioned plan is a touring swing arm anyways so if this ones damaged it's no biggy, they're dirt cheap on the E of bays.

Cylinder 1 was running a bit rich compared to the others.

GAS AXE:thumbsup:
I couldn't wait lol.
Gosh! - Really! - There's a surprise. ;)

I'm sure you know, but...did you heat the Loctite, putting it back in liquid form for easy removal? This may, may not apply to this, just saying. Also, when Scott @warp9.9 was here, he told me that I would have to use a punch to get them started off. Smack the side towards removal. Great work getting started. I and others will be watching, since I to have a 2010 touring to chop........some day, or just another pipe dream

Will be very interesting to see if it's an original engine (what number is it?), if it's silver then maybe it has not had any of the many updates.

Re the stuck cam ladder and head bolts, i found on an older engine they can be a bit stuck (not overtight), just need a quick sharp rap of a hammer on back of the torx bit to break the grip of the slight surface binding in the threads

No, that pic was prior to shipping and had a few items that weren't included.

Crap, I was gonna haggle you regarding a swap for a black set.
Do you know if the components of the early silver forks are the same as our black Roadster forks?

As far as I've been able tell yes. Triumph made some marketing hubbub about the roadsters revised suspension, but, I'm fairly certain it's just the shocks they changed.
