After searching all he sighs he lowest was 212 and my dealer will sell it to me for 229$ as flip would say why not support your local dealer when you can, maybe if I get the breaks from him too they will put the rear pads on for free while the tire is off
 
If your dealer is selling you the rear Metzeler for that, then let them do it. My dealer wanted $299 for the rear Metzeler, plus installation.

I told them I really wanted to support them, but I can't justify it when I can buy the same tire on line for $100 less.

How did these work for you ?


You compare the Cobra and Venom - how about the Cobra and Metzeler ?
Did you notice any adverse handling with the Metzeler on front ?
How many miles have you gotten from the Avon ?

I'm up for a new rear tire and want to try the Avon if they handle better and/or last longer.

Your feedback is greatly appreciated.

I just ordered another Metzler for the front, darkside on the back. Orded it from American motorcycle Tire, went with the HB rated instead of the VR. It was $40 cheaper and I don't think the rating will make that much difference. I don't drive 130 mph very often. $128 shipped to my house. Just a heads up on a less expensive option. With 7500 miles now I am totally pleased with the performance of my Avon Cobra rear and original Metzeler front combination. Let me add that I am a very agressive rider.

I only got 3700 on my first Metzeler, down to the steel. I do a lot of passing, and would hit the throttle hard, 45 to 90 as quickly as possible, assumed this is the reason for the low milage. Burning rubber without realizing it.
I ride mostly rough country roads.
I was expecting at least 5000 miles, needed a replacement in a hurry so got another Metzeler. I will be ordering a Cobra shortly, respect your opinion/experience.

You're getting 7000 on the Cobras. Are they that much better than the Metzeler, should I take your 'hard riding' to be other than rapid acceleration, or might I have had a lemon tire, other issues to consider?
I can hardly think there is a problem with the bike itself. If it's not the rapid acceleration, must be a stretch of road that is especially abrasive.
The tire only had 15 miles on it at delivery.

The steel was a fairly neat strip right in the middle of the tire, ran consistently at 35 psi.
 
Let me clarify here. I had 2300 miles on my R3 prior to replacing the Metzeler with the Avon Cobra. It now has about 5200 but it still has a lot of tread left.

I think I'm like most of us that buy a Rocket III in that I enjoy frequent hard acceleration. I also enjoy agressive cornering whenever I can. That stated, I probably ride 2 up more than you (50%) and when my wife is on the back my riding style is consideraby "relaxed" from solo, however, she is more used to speed than most wives so I still get away with more than most. The roads we ride make a big difference. Out here we travel on a lot of concrete freeways where speeds are high (80-90) but rapid acceleration is not the norm (if you want to stay out of jail )I think your last statement is a big contributor to short tire life. 35 psi is too low. I run 40-42. Any less allows the tread to squirm around causing unnecessary heating which accelerates wear. I also run 40-41 up front as well.
If you ride solo and fast all the time I would expect about 4200 miles on a rear. If you back off a little you might see 5,000. From experience I do feel the Avon Cobra wears better though and it's traction seems as good or better than the Metzeler.
