Oil change - that old chestnut again

Buy the best oil you can afford, done deal. I found that if I rock the motor left and right as I straddle it, I get a more complete drain.

I drain on the side stand, so maybe this is the reason.

Don't forget to put the filler plug in before you start the engine, like when you're running it through for the first time and checking the oil level. Best to fill your new filter with oil before mounting. It takes a few seconds for the oil to pass through the filter and pressure to build.

Well I think that is a lesson learnt, I did not know that but think before I run it, I will drop the 5 litres out, hadn't bought the extra litre yet so apart from a 30 second run I haven't done anything with it. I can afford to buy some more oil, I cant really afford to buy a new gearbox so think I will play safe and not test it, just in case!

Lesson learnt is dont listen to the idiot in Halfrauds who told me it was for bikes and cars :whitstling:

Have had a read on the JASO and API standards and happy the Motul I have just ordered is the right stuff, thanks, it is MA2 :thumbsup:


Hey , just a thought...take 5 mins to write to Halfords and explain you were advised wrongly. One of their propositions is to be a resource for customers. Worth a try , you might get a credit...all ya gotta do is invest 10 mins. Address to Managing Director...not Customer service.
 
I use the Mobil 1 Racing 4T Motorcycle oil. It meets or exceeds any recommendations by the manufacturer. It is spendy but then again so is an engine or transmission. ;)

That is what I used when I changed the oil upon purchase of my Touring. It had only 6800 miles on it but the oil had been dealership changed 3 times already by the original owner owner.

Edit: I used 15-40 but am now wondering if I should have used 20-50.

I don't even know what a quart is!!

I am shocked! I have always heard the phrase of "mind your Ps and Qs" came from the UK.

-Mind your pints and quarts. This is suggested as deriving from the practice of chalking up a tally of drinks in English pubs (on the slate). Publicans had to make sure to mark up the quart drinks as distinct from the pint drinks.-

From what I understand, Quarts are for the men...

Im using what Bob Carpenter recommended. He also seems good with Motul 300V. And a Wix filter.

Ya diesl oils do not have the goodies that screw with a clutch. I ran it a few times but like running 87 octane in his kitted motors I do not !!!! Now if my bike was stock I'd be trying Amsoil 20w50 motorcycle oil. But I've stuck to motul or redline since talking to the people who frind Carpenter's cams. Mostly redline as it is readily available over here since its made in the USA :)

Scott, which Redline oil did you use?
I liked the Amsoil stuff since its cheap and readily available. You saying the Amsoil diesel and marine is woodpile use only?

I havent tried the Motul stuff since id have to order it.
