Just refilled with 91 RON. Got 20km more than I have been getting with 98 before the light came on. Been riding the same and a bit more 2 up. Really feels like it pulls better low down so probably using less throttle. Will see what this tank is like as it will have bugger all 98 in it this time (last tank still had about 4-5 litres of 98 when I filled with 91).

I've put through 4 tanks of the 91 now and agree with your results Canberra to a 't".
Further, I've noticed it doesn't burble and pop as much on hard deceleration. Pretty sure it's running a bit "smoother" throughout although , as you say , it's subtle and largely a matter of perception.
I'll run another cuppla tanks through and then sneak a tank of 98 into the wee beastie to see what happens.

Obviously, we have a sight problem.........:D

Gasoline is like mouthwash or oil filters. It all comes from the same place, or in this case, tank farm and gets distributed to different brand filling (end user) stations.
Yep, it is all the same since one refiner pumps his stuff in one end of the pipeline and takes whatever comes out of the other end. Only difference is what they may add to it in the way of chemical modifiers. Another thing consumers don't typically know is that there are only two tanks in the ground... Regular and Premium. All the "mid-grades" are just mixes of the two tanks blended at the pump. Tricky huh ;)?

been running mine on 91 non ethanol since I went to Tassie and could not get 95/98 in a couple of locations I thought it was my imagination at the time but it seem to run better so did an experiment when I got home and proved it ..runs smoother especially when it's cold just after start up and it appears to give better milage:)

The other thing I've been noticing these cold mornings is that it fires up instantly on the first crank. My recent 'flat battery' experiences wouldn't have happenned if it had started so easily at the time. All pretty conclusive. And I'm already $9 richer!

It is much harder to ignite premium with low compression pistons when it's cold for sure. I thought it would be cool to put dads octane booster in the lawn mower as a kid. After getting my ass beat the **** thing wouldn't start. Have to admit though, between that episode of emptying the tank and carb myself and taking watches apart ... I developed an interest in mechanics. Funny how those things shape a brain.

We did all kinds of fuel trials while I worked at Mercedes in KC, something happened to the fuel in that town that really messed up the valves on European cars. It was like someone threw a switch and they all ran like crap from "chocolate cake" on the valves at the same time. Learned who was cutting corners on their refining and who was doing something about it with additives. Got alot of info on octane at the same time, rotten greedy bastards with their gas commercials telling everyone to buy premium if they love their car. Everyone got a little tired of me yelling at the TV screaming Bull-shoot. ;)

I remember this from high school auto mechanics.

Increased octane = increased resistance of a fuel to burn. Higher octane = less energy per given volume of fuel, compared to a lower octane.

The only reason to use a high octane fuel is to control pre-ignition (ping) in a high compression engine.

My teacher, Mr Windsor, said "premium doesn't mean it's better, it just costs more".

Mine said the same thing, probably the coolest thing I learned from him was how to set the timing with a vacuum gauge and test driving for the ping. We fought alot, but when he asked me to be his teaching assistant I knew he liked me. Good times. ;)

This makes a lot of sense now. Since I put the mods on but have yet to dyno I thought I would be running lean. However having come
from a sports bike background I have been running bp 98. Went on a ride last week and one of my mates riding behind me said the bile was running pretty rich - now I know why! Best flush some 91 through just before the dyno! Awesome thread!!!!
