Lower Timing Chain Blew-up!!!!!!!

Update!!

OK, spoke to Gus today and Triumph Corp (TC) is sending a new crank. I am going to try and get the correct language, bear with me on this....we discussed a lot of things this morning.

It was the lower timing chain gear that failed. He mentioned, "it crystalized and failed." Supposedly there is a keyway that holds it in place at the crank?!? After it failed or during normal progressive use?? It rattled so bad that the crank was damaged. He mentioned that on the early engines, like mine, it was a potential location of a problem. The newer motors have since been corrected. The new crank is due in today, down side is another week down. It is getting fixed though....:)

The engine is built like a diesel engine. The pistons are in sleeves. That was news to me, but it makes sense. New rings, sleeves, valves, valve seats, crank, chain, gear, etc are being replaced with new parts. Pistons were not damaged. He also mentioned that the damage was not due to anything I did from riding the bike, just mechanical. He also mentioned that he could have left the crank in but it may or may not have failed again down the road. He did not want to take that chance. TC was in agreement and glad it was brought to there attention with his assessment. He also mentioned that they are picking up all costs related to the repair, no questions on expenses. He said that if they were going to balk on reimbursement, he was going to tell them to send a new bike. I was OK with that option.... TC is covering it, the whole cost. I asked why they just don't ship in a new motor instead of rebuilding. He said that they don't have motors sitting around they are built at the factory and installed on new bikes. They only rebuild existing motors as mine is getting fixed!!! OK, I guess..

I asked "is this like a new engine," he said yes, I won't have to bring it in for anything other than oil changes (and tires) until 10,000-12,000 miles down the road for valve adjustments. Unless I have more problems....

I brought up the 500 mile break-in (I think that is what it is, don't have the manual in front of me) as referenced in the manual. he said the break-in is for the transmission, not the engine?!?! OK.... So, no is the answer to that one.

All kinds of fun on this one. It has been raining the past two weeks anyway, so I probably wouldn't be riding anyway.

The saga continues............

I will give another update as things progress along.

Ride Safe!!!!!!!!

I just heard back from the dealer on my bike. The service manager said that everything in the front of my engine looked fine, and they did not replace anything, [per Triumphs command.] Said eight of my valves were too tight and is trying to convince me that was causing the noise.
"HORSE SH*T ", I say. I won't be able to go get it till Saturday, but I will let you know how it sounds. He did say that the tensioner clicked out two ticks when he pulled it out. Sounds like it was stuck to me, but Triumph would not replace it.

av8r4fun

Your getting new sleves, rings, crank, and valves and gear and they told you that break in is only for the transmition, and this Is suposed to be one of the better dealers..Tell them you want all the old parts,I'am betten they don't replace the pistons and rings..av8r4fun Iam sure your bike will be fine when you get It back but who Is telling you all this crap about break In..The more I hear about dealers the worse It gets..Ask them what the the torque Is on the front of the crank for the nut that holds the timming chain sproket on..I need that to replace my own sproket and It ain't In the manual..Thanks man Jack

Wilbur ,the only way valves can be to tight Is If the valve itself Is pounding Itself Into the seat causing less clearance at the stem and camshaft..The clearance Is usually to much from ware and you add shims to take up the clearance to reduce It..Cant believe some of the crap deallers put out...Jack

Need help

Hey gang does anyone know the torque value for the nut that holds the lower timing gear (or sproket)to the front of crank shaft..The service manual doesn't seem to have It..Page 3.3 has the value for the locking bolt (27Nm)but not the nut..Mabey this Is something new that I don't understand..Mabey you just leave the nut hand tight. This manual leaves a lot to be desired..Yes I know I'am blind,so could somebody please prove me wrong.. Please..Page 1.20 has torque values for the sprokets to the cams but not for sproket to crankshaft..Wonder what value the techs are using when they do this job..Where Is sight glass??? Thanks gang... Jack

I finally got my 07 Tourer back, after 3 weeks. While there were only 4 parts replaced, as opposed to the full package detailed earlier, there is likely to have been only one single component responsible for it all. Unfortunately the work involved goes down, way down, into the bowels to replace the keyway between the crank and the sprocket. That tiny little piece appeared to me to have the only apparent damage to it. I didn't have my pocket micrometer to check the specs on everthing. A stinking keyway of pisspoor quality steel was bruised; with the shoulders worn. I took a couple pics but I've not gotten them to the dark room yet.

AV8- sounds like you're being taken care of. I know you said that your bike was an '05 and you purchased it in '06, was it new when you bought it?
