Ride
2005 Rocket III
I rode the '05 Rocket to work the other day. Has been running fine "forever"! Turned on the key, gauge sweep, hit the ignition and the RPM jump into action for a second or two and then back to idle and ready for the day. After work, feels like 105 outside, I straddle the old gal, turn the key, hit the button and she starts and dies. Hit the button again and she starts & dies. Third time, as soon as she starts, I throttle up a little and she runs fine. Upon releasing the throttle, she drops back to an idle so low that she won't run. Next time, I hit the button, she fires and I keep the throttle tight so the RPM's allow me to head home. Runs great out on the road as usual, just won't hold at idle. Didn't ride her this past weekend for fear of getting stranded, but did start her in the shop a few times only to find the same situation, won't idle.

Some electronic gizmo has failed me I fear after 11 years. Drat! Suggestions where to start the repair please! Gotta get the Fat Bottom Girl back on the road.

You can run through some diagnostics with TuneEcu, but my guess is going to be the ever popular Primary TPS. $135 for the part and takes about 10 minutes to change it out and do an ISCV reset with TuneECU

Sounds like the TPS for sure. I had the opposite problem when mine went. Idled way too high. Went into a tight bend at the bottom of a hill and almost lost it when I didn't slow as expected.

As mentioned, not terribly expensive and a fairly simple install. Good luck.

What Tune/map is in your bike as the early 20050 map has a intermittent fault which will give those symptoms the later version 20227 or 20228 (TOR's) map will solve the fault, it is a fault in the root of the map which can not be accessed with any Tuning software and is the reason Triumph released the later version maps, if you need a copy send me your e-mail address
not say this is your problem as like the others said before me the TPS can also cause the same sort of issues, check to make sure it has not loosened itself on that Hot day and run the "adjust ISCV" function on the Tests page of TuneECU and that will tell whats going on with the TPS

Thanks Guys. I have the TuneBoy software but haven't had to hook the laptop up to the Rocket for years. She has been wonderful to me. Would surprise me that the tune is the issue, but who knows!

I'll be struggling to get back on track just to get the bike & laptop to chat together. Starting over you might say. HansO, I indeed have the 20050 map for K/N under seat filter, Cat bypass & TOR's. I'm gonna check a few things you listed, but I may need that updated tune you mentioned. What is the "adjust ISCV" function you speak of? Remember, have been blessed and the bike hasn't needed communications with the software for the last 7 or 8 years. So I won't know what I'm doing for a bit.

Will let you know.

Rusty is that you my old riding partner? long time no hear glad to see you are still riding.

Hey Scot! Yes, it's me! Still scooting around on the original Rocket. Just over 30K miles now. I'm not into long distance rides much these days. Although I would like to "chase those leaders" down the road in Tennessee again, with you right there along with us. That was the most exhilarating ride of my life. An experience I will never forget. Although the 14 hour trip back home with Pianoman is pretty memorable as well. That was a long day.

My FBG has been a delight to own. No trouble what so ever over the years. I still have that vibration in the engine when she hits 3 grand, no matter what gear. I heard years ago that there was a fix for that but I don't do over 3 grand too often, so I let it go.

You keeping the shiny side up? On the original Rocket?

Yes still have the 05 have about 75000 miles on it also have a2011 Roadster with the 210hp carpenter kit but minus the carp exhaust so it is putting out around 180hp.
Do you ever hear from Pianoman he was one good guy, keep safe my friend .

Rusty please do tell when you find the cause of the symptom, inquiring minds want to know!

My Daytona does the exact same thing after sitting in the sun, always runs fine after about 10 seconds of being temperamental. Just hashed it up to a touch of vapor lock in the tank or a not perfect injector.

my 07 did almost the same back fro raa running down I25 at 90 or so stopped for fuel did not want to idle got gas still not wanting idle unless held it at 2000 rpm or so stopped for some food idled just fine till later on in day same thing finished trip home just fine no problem since figured it was running down road at 75 to 90 mph then trying to idle it maybe starving it?i know it makes on sence maybe fuel filter?or heat?
