I have an old Harley brand shorty I have had for years. On trips I wear a full
open face with either a clear or smoke snap shield. For really cold weather I do have a full face I wear occasionally.

Helmets should be replaced every 4-5 years. More often if you use them frequently.
The styrofoam liner deteriorates from the effects of ozone in the air and repeated usage. Over time it compresses which lessens it's ability to absorb an impact.

This is a really interesting discussion. To me it seems that the whole helmet issue is to some extent influenced by the bike you ride. Living in a no helmet law state, I expect that if the discussion was being held on a local Harley site, well, there would be no discussion. Helmets on Harley riders around here are about as common as morality in a politician.

Having ridden BMWs for the last 20 years or so, most BMW riders would find the idea of 'what kind of helmet looks good on my bike' laughable. It would be like asking what color backpack should I wear when skydiving. The phrase ATGATT is treated as gospel by most BMW riders and if you suggest anything less they will show up at your house and take your bike away.

It appears that Rocket owners are indeed an eclectic bunch. Some will wear nothing but a full face helmet while others treat a helmet as strictly a weather dependent piece of clothing.

I don't mean to be judgemental, but the phrase '$10 head, $10 helmet' does come to mind. Well, maybe passing 60 has made me just a bit judgemental. Sorry.

I used to subscribe to your '$10 head, $10 helmet' theory until a couple of years ago when Motorcyclist magazine ran a series of tests on various helmets that more or less shot down that theory with some of the cheaper helmets coming out better than the expensive high end ones

Confused

When I bought the Rocket in '05 the dealer suggested a 3/4 full shield HJC helmet. I could never keep the visor down above 35 mph so I went to the HJC hinged helmet. It felt fairly comfortable for a while but then got real tight front to back.

I wanted a Schuberth J1 but I understand they're not shipping to the US for now so probably no DOT rating.

I've been interested in Arai helmets because they supposedly have a model named "Profile" that would fit my long, oval head. Problem is I can't seem to find a XXL to try on and I'm not going to order one over the internet and not be able to return it if it doesn't fit.

That leaves Shoei helmets that my dealer carries. I got to try their XXL and it felt like a million bucks and almost cost that much. Actually I think the Multitec hinged helmet goes for close to $500.

I watch video reviews of Nolan and Scorpion and Caberg and, and, and..... Trouble is I can't find any dealers in town that will order one for me to try. Maybe they can't return them once opened? Who knows.

Some people are looking for ventilation and others for quietness. Some like the internal drop down visor and others prefer one piece design. It gets to be over whelming but I'm sure most of us are just looking for the best protection a helmet can give ....... cause that's the main reason for buying one; isn't it?

Looks like it's going to be a Shoei Multitec Matte Black for me. I do know that as soon as I lay down the bucks for it...... I'll find the helmet of all time for me and won't be able to afford to buy it!

Poor Pitiful ME!

I'm going to quit posting to these types of questions. Either some jack calls you a retard, or says you have a 10$ head. Keep it to yourself. I'm safer when I'm comfortable and can see. If you don't want to know, then don't ask.
Pianoman, I couldn't find Caberg locally either. But there are stocking dealers that shouldn't mind shipping to you for your purposes. I found a dealer in MD (I think) and I had them ship me two sizes of the same Caberg model. Yea, they charged my credit card for both, but I turned the second one that didn't fit around the day I got it and my card was credited before the billing cycle flipped. So, maybe try getting on the internet and find a stocking dealer?

Pianoman:

Scorpion is made by HJC and has the HJC patented quick release visor. I really like my HJC full face. Has good ventilation and you can de-bug the visor really quick. I still prefer the Bell 3/4 for the Rock though.

.......I know a few individuals who have heads worth less than ren dollars. Substantially less....................................

I read that article more than once and agree with you completely. I think it raised some very valid issues with Snell testing. Personally I'm more comfortable with a helmet that meets current Euro standards than one that has Snell certification.

Oh, and baron, I certainly wasn't implying that you were a retard or that you have a $10 head. In fact, I have no way of knowing how much your head is worth.

I didn't start the thread and didn't ask for anyones opinion. I was simply offering my opinion which you of course feel I should keep to myself. I will try to watch for your posts in the future and be mindful not to offer an opinion unless it completely agrees with yours.
