Exhaust setup and tune questions

Another Hi from Auss if you decide to go the PCV + AT route drop me a PM with your e-mail and I will send my AFR map.
If you are worried about taking out the secondaries check with your dealer I know they don't worry about it here in Auss and as soon as you alter the ECU map with TuneECU you are in breach of your warranty as others have said get it home ride for a while get used to it and if like me a month after I got mine the secondaries got canned and then the fun really started think long and hard about the exhaust system it is probably your biggest investment and you need to think about whether you will be doing internal mods down the track if so go the Carpenters or have a pipe guy custom build you something there is enough discussions here about what you need so first enjoy it don't kill yourself think about what want you may even end up like some here that are happy with only mild improvements :)... I ain't one of them:rolleyes::D

Hanso (Hans Solo?)...I'm a bit familiar with AT. It seems it can "kinda" take the place of doing a dyno. I'm referring to it getting the mapping and internal settings tweaked after the initial maps are loaded and settled on. Of course, a dyno let's you actually SEE what's going and so YOU can make the adjustments. Anyway, what's your thoughts on this. I'm actually leaning to using the Tune ECU. LOT's cheaper and from what I've read here trolling in the caves, there are some **** fine maps that people are very happy with without doing a dyno (I believe you're of the Tune ECU map kings right?). So...I may not even go the PC or AT route. But then again...I might. Still listing and lurking to see what might be best.

Also, I talked to a salesman at a dealership near me and asked him about the warranty concerning the various exhaust mods , mapping, dyno, etc. He said that none of this will void the warranty. Not sure about the secondaries but basically he said Triumph really is against the wall on voiding warranties UNLESS they can conclusively trace the failure to something the customer did in the modding that directly caused the problem. Otherwise, it's good to go. Seems reasonable to me. Now, doesn't any plugin unit like TuneECU, PC, TuneBoy, etc. remap the ECU? Anyway, I'll reconfirm before I do anything but that's what he said. I definitely don't want to do anything that might void the warranty until it's gone away.

At this point I'm not even thinking about the Carpenters or internal modding. That's way down the line if ever. It'll be the TORs or Jardines, filters, and maps (maybe a dynoto top it all off). I think I'll be more than happy at that point for a good long while. Like I said, it come down to the money when I get ready to buy, I'f I'm in the green, I'll do the mods straight up. If not I'll wait. I've always been that way all my life with projects like this. I do a lot of research decide what I want...and GO for it. I really get a lot of enjoyment out of the "process" leading up to the "big day"...then WHAM it comes rushing home and I soak it in for the long haul. Of course, I'm failiar with bikes, cars, guns, and such and you never really get finished. There's always a new tweak of mod to make a little bit better. The R3 will be no different I'm sure of that. But hey, as I can see by all the intensity and excitement from the Rocketeers here like you who've been doing this awhile...that's part of the fun. Same with me.

Oh, still haven't gotten an answer on the collector from previous posts. I know it'll be gone with Jars but what's the recommendation with it if I go the TORs route? I'm still trying to understand all the differences between the R3, the Classic, the Touring, and the brand new de-limited Roadster. The cats and the "box" is just one of them.

Thanks mucho for the help.

Another Aussie welcome.

With the original 3 pipe system (pre Roadster), the only cat was in the collector crossover box under the bike. Adding TORs did not remove the cats so a new crossover was needed. Triumph does one and so does Staintune.

The Roadster has its cats in the mufflers, so removing the stock pipes and fitting TORS with no other mods eliminates the cats. The crossover "box" under the bike is basically empty but does have some baffling to equalise the gas flow between the two pipes. I presume it is therefore somewhat restrictive. Staintune does a crossover pipe which is straight through and merely joins the left and right sides. It's pretty expensive for what it is but improves flow. Fitting a system like Jardine (or any 3:1) eliminates the cats and also the crossover box.

I found that getting rid of the box costs at least another $300 unless you can build a cross-over yourself. There are a few cross-overs on ebay (ship from UK) for around that price and the staintunes are upwards of $700. Easily puts you back in the same price range as the Jardines.

BBR....

The absolute last thing I would do to a new Rocket III is put it on a Dyno...for a complete tune:eek:

Maybe a base line torque and hp dyno run after a few 1000 miles would be OK

But to watch one of the best tuners in the country work for 1 to 1 1/2 hours on getting everything out of a bike is something to see. But hard to watch also when it is your bike setting up there..But that is up to the guy tunning the bike...if close is good enough it may not be that bad.....On the other hand if the tuner is trying to get everything he can out of that bike....it is pure hell on that machine.

I do not care how hard you can ride that bike you will never come close to the Hell it gets on that dyno.

When you decide to install the K&N's to your bike...just use a soldering iron to heat the small screws to remove the secondarys...a little heat makes them come right out
Nothing to it.

Now back to the Raisenetts.....I do not know many Rocket Riders that will run their rockets at full throttle for one minute in 5th gear.
By that I mean wide open in first, second, third, fourth and hold fifth gear for one minute.

When you have done that......let me know..:D

Point taken Joey.

By the way, what are advantages/disadvantages of removing the secondaries (or leaving them in)?
instant response, yeah instant!!!.. watch it the first time you take of after removing or you might snap your neck, it also smooths out the bottom end

as far a tune is concerned PM me when are ready ..once you work out what you are running exhaust/ intake wise. One of the Advantages of the PCV + AT is if you are changing anything later on it will adapt the fuelling automatically
Hans

The Secondarys .....it stops the rider from getting full power out of the Rocket in the lower gears.

I think they start opening some where in 3rd gear...They are motor driven by the computer..you only get about 60% full throttle with them in.

My Dealer....removed mine on the first free oil change and installed a better ecu program..By that time I had installed a cat delete pipe and gutted the mufflers some.

I bought a almost new set of stock mufflers off ebay.....those were the ones I used a 1/2 in drill bit 20 inches long to drill around the exhaust tube

I still have my orignal muffler, cat tucked away..they have less that a 1000 miles on them...I also have the sawed off mufflers and headers and a cat delete pipe...tucked away...Too:D

I installed the Jardines just a short time ago.....I love them....Awesome power and sound

Oooo...sounds good! Thanks for all the awesome support peeps. I think I've got a pretty good understanding now of the options.

Did I saw you guys are awesome? Oh yeah...I did.

Oh one more question: If I install the K&N triples, is it recommended to mod the claw a bit to allow more air flow or will leaving it alone be OK?
