Actually, seems to just depend on taste and the size of filters you use...most of the threads I've come across haven't answered that specifically. In other words, I don't think anyone's done any tests to see if modding the claw makes any noticeable hp difference. Common sense says it will help, but without tests, may only be a miniscule amount better? If you do mod, there's lots of great ideas, from drill bit size breather holes to full on cut outs and cut offs. Final thought is the claw protects the filters from the elements too.

in this above thread link, you can see what taking it to the Max is about in as far as Air filters goes I have put on K&N RX 4040's on my bike, if you want to do internal mods later it will be necessary to allow enough Air in if you are going to just leave the engine stock then the K&N 2780 will do. there are other Filters in the K&N range or you can go for the Pipercross set up that Warp is playing with

With the original 3 pipe system (pre Roadster), the only cat was in the collector crossover box under the bike. Adding TORs did not remove the cats so a new crossover was needed. Triumph does one and so does Staintune.

The Roadster has its cats in the mufflers, so removing the stock pipes and fitting TORS with no other mods eliminates the cats. The crossover "box" under the bike is basically empty but does have some baffling to equalise the gas flow between the two pipes. I presume it is therefore somewhat restrictive. Staintune does a crossover pipe which is straight through and merely joins the left and right sides. It's pretty expensive for what it is but improves flow. Fitting a system like Jardine (or any 3:1) eliminates the cats and also the crossover box.

This is the route I took because I didn't want a extremely loud pipes on my Roadster. I bought the TORS and the Staintune crossover.

Tors $499
Staintune crossover $499 (Yep it was $499 but it fits the Roadster like it grew there still to much money for the **** thing)
Total basically $1000 not counting shipping.

Now after I rode Joey's bike with the Jardines I have concluded that the Jardines are not as obnoxious as I thought. I believe I could live with them. The Jardines that I heard on a Roadster awhile back must had the baffles removed.... because they were LOUD!

With the Jardines you lose the stock manifold coming off the head and gain a header which of course flows better than the manifold. You will not gain the flow of a header with the TORS only.

If I was you (wish I did this) I would remove the secondaries, install the triple K&Ns, purchase the Jardines, by the time you receive them you will have put some miles on the bike, install the Jardines, take it to POWER-TRIPP Performance and let Wayne dyno it. He uses TuneECU so you won't have to buy a PC-V at all. He'll raise the speed limiter and the rev limiter as well of course tune you bike to the Jardines. I've had my bike on his dyno and no damage occurred. I was worried that he or any dyno for that matter would cause havoc but he assured me "I will not get any where close to the breaking point of the engine while dynoing your bike". Wayne knows Rockets is why I recommend him as well as he is in Alabama ... not to far from you I assume.

Now if you do this I bet you will be happy with the performance of the bike. I would not lead you wrong because I have traveled the trail and learned by mistakes in which you don't have to make. I love my Roadster.

Hasno - the 4040s look sweet man! But I don't think I wanna leave my filters open to the elements. The 2780s will be fine for me. just wondering if taking a bit off the bottom of the claw might help the flow. I like the look of the claw too. Might even look into a carbon claw from:

Mully - Yep, for just a bit more, the Jardines are a better choice since you get the header. As far as Mr. Tripp is concerned, he's a bit far for me to go get a dyno. If I did one, I'd want to find find someone closer...probably Houston, Dallas, or Austin area who's familiar with Rockets and TuneECU. I can go with PC5+AT (more dyno shops use it) and the AT is really cool but it'd save me a butt-load of moola to use TuneECU with some custom Hanso or Tripp maps. Oh...and I'll definitely get the secondaries removed right off the bat when the intake/exhaust mod is installed.

Woohoo! I'm .020 over now and shootin' for .040!

the K&N's will with stand a torrential downpour I have ridden 500km in pouring rain with no problem

The new Roadster tune has the secondaries open 100% except in 4th and 5th at the very top end. You can open them there with TuneECU but you still have to add back the fuel. There is no reason to remove them. You'd still need to add the fuel. Don't count on getting your tuning done with TuneECU unless you know of someone who has a lot of experience with it. I suggest you buy the bike with TORs. Peak torque is not limited and I bet this will blow you away. If not, you have the option of getting the Jardines and triple filters, opening the secondaries to 100% and raising the speed limit with TuneECU, and retuning the fuel with a PCV. That is the most straightforward route since a lot of tuners use it. If you have the bucks, Carpenter can get you to 200+ HP with just cams, head work, and their exhaust.

Hans, That's good to know...I was wondering just how much they'll take. I'm assuming they're ok if they sit out in the rain overnight as well? Won't happen often but sometimes on the road, there's just no covered parking available. I love the much deeper rumble of the open filters, particularly around the 2-3K RPM spot

I had the baffles in the jardines.....but they were Nakkid so they were much louder than with the baffles wrapped.

They are much mellower with the baffles wrapped..

Yeah...from what I'm seeing here, there's no definitive numbers but Mr. Tripp made some good points on larger filters. I'll prolly just go with the 2780's but Hanso, I gotta say, those 4040's just look straight-up BADASS brutha! They do justice to the big block and almost look like stacks with radial venting on the caps. Friggin' awesome man! I think they look best with no claw...like a **** drag motor. I "say" I'll prolly do the 2780's but the more I look at the 4040's...

If I go the 2780 route, I'm toying with trying to insert some mesh venting of some sort in the claw but it'll be tricky since the places where I'd want to install them are the curved "bulbs" over the intakes. The vents I've seen out there are flat so that won't work. Might look cool installing them in a row on the upper claw above the bulbs but I'll keep looking. I can trim the claw of course like others have done but I'm looking for a new twist on the mod. I think some kind of metal mesh vents would look really cool if done right. Something like these...or similar:

BTW Hanso...doesn't your left left rub on the back filter?

A few guys have drilled holes in their bear claw. Just another option for you.
Personally I prefer the cut look. I have the 2780s and cut just enough away to expose them completely and I did feel it made a difference.
Be aware that the extra noise is not to everyone's liking.
