Do you mean check engine light is on when you turn the key before starting the engine? If so that is normal. Check engine light, oil pressure light and ABS light should display before hitting the starter and then go off as the engine starts Within a second or so for the check engine and oil pressure and the abs will go off as you start moving when its behaving normally.

Im fairly sure the lights display to demonstrate they are working prior to running conditions.

as far as i know they all go out as soon as u let it run ( correct me if i am wrong)
i asked him to check to see if the engine light is working (on) and if flickering?
 
I have not been very clear. The warning light is the oil light. This is one of the lights that turn on when the ignition is switched to on.
The light hasn’t flashed like a turn signal. It flickers, never systematicly. Never where you can repeat it. Sometimes it happens when cold, low idle. It might start showing going down the road at steady speeds. Not repeatable at all. Reminds me of a a.c. Circuit that is loose. Stays on for minutes at times, then goes out. The engine runs strong, no changes in sound or feel. I used a machinery stethoscope and no noise, knocking or clicking as you would expect if lack of lubricant to engine. I thought a bad connection. Can’t find one. So that’s the background. Slightly better explained. Putting a good 16 pin device would be a great idea. Maybe a warm day coming up, and I can ride it 3 miles to my auto mechanic’s shop.

Well, I suppose you can give me your schedule, when your available, and Jamie and I can set up one of the spare bedrooms. Tucson isn’t all that far. The weather sucks here right now. 25 degrees F. That alone will make my Rocket a quick fix.
The mechanic is a buddy of mine. I was thinking to give the programming a real chance. My reader only gives me the erase option. And I don’t have faith in what I accomplished with it.
Is the consensus that I should go thru the wiring connections? Honestly I had a hell of a time tracing the wiring from the bottom of the tank at the back of the engine...
 
Cheapest thing to try first, I think, would be the oil pressure sending unit. I'd be very scared to run it much, until I figured out what was going on. And BTW, it's even getting a lil nippy down here in SW Florida too!

But if it were mine i would replace oil sending unit clear codes and see what happens.
Now the alternitive is to go pulling on wires till u cause another pronlem. Good luck in fixing your bike.
 
So the problem, just to be clear, is a flickering low oil pressure light and the bike is producing an error code of p1690?

If that’s the case it sounds like a voltage issue in the cabling somewhere between oil pressure sensor on back of the engine up to the instrument cluster.

one obvious option is to check the connection to the sensor, if thats fine then possibly replace the sensor (it’s about $20) after that check the wiring.... the workshop manual has a wiring diagram in it.... this is a known problem with these bikes.... it can be anything from the oil, a faulty or aftermarket filter that’s not great, or a range of wiring issues.

I had a strange oil pressure light that seems to have been fixed by a combination of 50 weight oil and tuning.... many have had to increase their rpm at idle from 850. (Factory spec) to about 900-950.

I’m sure others will weigh in with other suggestions relating to an oil pressure sensor light flickering
