Darkside rubber

Got the new tire mounted and took her for a trial run yesterday, and i've got to admit i am quite suprised (and relieved) by how well it handles. Pulling out of the shop thru the back yard it felt like "Oh hell no, this won't work!". But once i got out on the open road and got to feeling it out, it was like second nature! True, handling at slow parking lot speeds is a little comprimised, and road crown can affect or feel a little weird. But hit a curve and power it on, and it handles like she's on a rail! Countersteer input although needed, is not a real issue. Bigern

The discussions on the 225 size surround the 50 series tire. The size charts and calculators that I've seen say that a 225/55 is the closest match to the Metz. In fact the 55 series is just barely larger which should be a poor man's way of a speedo correction. I had originally settled on a Riken Raptor but now I'm leaning towards the Cooper with the rounded shoulders. Local car tire dealer will sell me one for $153 including mounting (off bike of course).

BTW, by any metric conversion calculator a 225mm converts to 8.85" A 240=9.44 and a 205=8.07"

Additionally, the 240 is recommended for a 7.5" rim width. Which I believe is the actual width on the Rocket rear rim. A 200 (not exactly a 205) is recommended (per the calculator I used) fit on a 5.5" rim width. I run a set of 205s on a caged Chrysler with 5.5" rim width.

I went back to goodyears publication and it actully gives the tread width as 7.7 "

it is a 225/50/ZR16 I am not sure if the "Z" designation makes a difference, It has a "Rim Flange protector" (I case I don't here my curb scratchers) I thought that was what the "Z" meant

I guess I am going to find out . . . I just ordered a Goodyear Eagle 245/50 R16. I had seen this one on a couple of other bikes and like the design. Plus 180 mph rating makes me feel a little better . . . not that I'll ever get close to that. Anyone else riding this tire??

tire shaving

I recall reading an article about a guy who used car tires on his bike. He said he went to a racing shop where they prepare new tires by spinning them up and shaving down the tread to get better grip. He had them put his tire on and radius the edges of the tread so that it would lean more easily. Any of you guys with the Popeye forearms ever try that?

Boogerdave, That tire will rub!

Boogerdave. been there, got that and the sucker ain't even close to rubbing. What appears to be the first point of contact is the clearance between tire and driveshaft. I have at least 3/4" of clearance at that point, It hasn't hit in almost 10,000 miles. I dont think its going to either.

If there is anything I have learned it is to pay no attenion to the naysayers. I still get all sorts of people that tell me its going to explode, fall off the wheel cause bead is different, the sidewall isn't built for that, and all sorts of other stories. I don't even try to convince anybody anymore. I just not my head and go for a nice long ride an the days they are wrenchin bikes to resurface there old skins.

By goodyears specs it 7.7" wide and I measured the circumferance to be 80" mounted on the stock rocket wheel (my worn out metz at 3600 mi was 81"). It is smooth and cool running, quiet and my rear brake rotor doesn't sound like a banjo when I roll it into a turn

I have photos in my photo album. take a look
