Dan Diego's Asphalt Adventure w/Photos!

I'm glad to see that you're still with us.

Regarding the motorcycle repair. There are downsides to either option, just as long as it's safe to ride after and you enjoy riding it that is all that matters.
That's a tough call whether to involve insurance. That is all up to you, if you think you might sell the bike between now and perhaps next little accident ... then get them to fix it back to shipshape. If you plan to ride the **** out of it forever, then just get it back where you can ride it into the ground.
With the right shop, you could even make a little money to cover your deductible.
This is a judgment call only you can make.

It's tough to hear about someone having to live my nightmare, although it sure is great to know you're doing okay. Thoughts and prayers sent your way.

Just a question, do you have full coverage?

I know a lot of guys that sa soon as they finish paying their bike they switch from full to liability, i hope is not your case,
i have 4 bikes and the rocket is the only one that i keep fully insured, i know if i ever drop it it would be expensive,
hope everything works out for you:)

I paid cash for my R3T and carry full coverage on it. I have other bikes in the stable and carry just liability on those. To add my BMW R1150GS to my GEICO poilicy was only $80 extra.

I went in to see the damage to my Rocket yesterday. I brought in new bars (thanks for Super D from this site) and Kuryakyn grips and that saved me about $230. That and a new clutch lever will make it ridable.

The pipes are scratched on both sides (bottom only) and they look fine. Same goes for the highway pegs...just a few small scratches. The dresser/crash bars lived up to their name and took the brunt of the fall. Only the rear left side needs to be replaced, the front has a gouge, but nothing serious.

The left-side saddlebag suffered the worse damage and I just don't know how that will come out. The shop is bringing in a paint and body expert who is fairly sure he can bring it back to new for $300. The chrome latch and Touring logo have to be replaced. My other options are: 1) buying a brand new one, or 2) buying a used one and painting it if it's not already in my color scheme.

Since the estimate to do all that is under $700, I may go that route, paying out of pocket and avoiding an insurance claim.

The estimate to replace everything was over $3K. That would've brought my bike back to showroom condition, but what's a few nicks among friends? Like me, my bikes show evidence of experience via scars and marks!

Question: What would you guys have done in this situation? Fix just the basics or go the insurance route? I fear that my policy rate will increase and wipe out the cost of repairs.

I think i would just do what you did, if you turn in a claim is gonna hunt you for 3 years, besides, every now and then members of the forum sell all kinds of used parts at well below dealers prices.
is just a matter of patience and keeping your eyes open:)
