Unless the manual is wrong, I thought the non return valve was actually that back connector (the long one) between the bottom of the oil tank and the crankcase. Also, I know some don't do this, but I change the o-ring on the main drain plug every time I change oil - never had a leak down there
 
FWIW (maybe nothing) when I use the home made block heater it's warming something up, because it starts afterwards.
I do have the EB mod.
 
they didnt fall out the sky because they had BTH MAGNETOS 2 of them , and the merlin wasnt built to a price
